TESSA's Story
Little Miss Tessa came to Longmeadow with another pony after her owner passed away. It took her some time to get used to her new life here at the Ranch. As time went on, however, and as she was introduced to other horses after her routine quarantine ended, Tessa began to settle in. She made friends with other equine and began to enjoy the company of humans. Before we knew it, she was ready to be evaluated by our trainers. Upon evaluation, our trainers found that Tessa knew certain cues that made them suspect that she had a history of training under saddle. Our head trainer believed, however, that enough time had passed since Tessa’s previous training that a restart was necessary. Fast forward to today, and Tessa is now being ridden at the walk and trot in our indoor arena & around our ranch and is doing very well! At times she can get impatient when her rider is mounting, or even under saddle when her rider wants to halt. This pony likes to move! We think Tessa would excel with a confident intermediate adopter who can continue working with her to teach her that patience is a virtue. While she sure is cute, this girl is not the pony for a beginner or small child. It should be noted that during her training, an old ligament issue arose in Tessa's right front leg. After PRP and shockwave therapy, Tessa spent some time off for rehabilitation. Our vets suggested she be put in corrective shoes to help with her comfort levels. Tessa has since completed her rehabilitation and while it did improve her overall comfort, she still displays lameness from time to time, particularly when worked in an arena with deeper footing. We have found that Tessa is most comfortable (and prefers) to ride outside. We have taken Tessa on trail rides with other horses and she is brave and sure footed. She is a lady on a mission and sometimes has disagreements with her rider about stopping to enjoy the scenery. We have also hauled Tessa off property for a 5 mile trail ride. She encountered a train passing in the distance, a river, multiple creek crossings, new horses, and heavy farm equipment, but this pony tooks took everything in stride. In the following days we checked her comfort level and she seemed to be fine. It seems to be the deeper footing that affects Tessa the most. Think Tessa is the pony for you?
