Sprocket-'s Story
PLEASE NOTE: THE INQUIRY FORM ON THIS PAGE IS NOT THE HEART OF PHOENIX ADOPTION APPLICATION

Sprocket had 110+ days of training with Joey Lezotte. Follow his progress at #hopteamsprocket

From trainer 8/10/25:

At about ten months old, Sprocket is a fun, curious, intelligent, and opinionated young fellow with a very upbeat personality. He is the first to come running up to you in the field. He isn't really interested in treats, but he loves back scratches (and he'll scratch you back with his lip for your trouble). He makes us laugh every day. He isn't shy with the other horses, getting right up in everyone's personal space. He does best if he has another horse friend around to show him that everything is okay and safe, as he can still get flighty around new things. With consistent, confident work, he is able to overcome his misgivings. He is definitely at a point where he will take confidence from his trainer - as long as you stay calm, he will learn pretty quickly that he doesn't need to freak out.

He is still very much baby brained, and can't do very long training sessions before he starts getting overwhelmed and stops thinking things through. He is learning to lunge, but is also going through a phase where he gets the zoomies when asked to go faster than a walk. We are working on keeping his brain working even when his feet are moving.

He will pony confidently off another horse, tie, stand for the farrier, and loves being groomed. He is also nice and quiet for fly spray. He doesn't love bath time, but if you work up slow starting at his feet he can get through it and is getting better! He will walk into water, and is getting much more confident getting on and off the trailer. He tackled out recent obstacle day with much more grace and poise than we expected, and got through a lot of scary new things!

Overall, this little fella has no limitations on where his life can go. He is athletic, intelligent, and fun to handle and be around. He needs a firm, kind, consistent, and confident handler to bring out the best in him. His natural curiosity makes him very trainable, and he has personality to spare!

From trainer 7/9/2025:

Things with Sprocket have been moving slow, but it looks like slow and steady is finally starting to pay off!

Sprocket came to us underweight, matted, and wormy. Because he was so physically uncomfortable, we didn't ask much of him - just to interact positively and safely with people, and to just be a horse.
Now that he's feeling so much better, he is responding much better to training. His first instinct was to set back against any kind of pressure. Any sudden movements would have him bolting for the hills. He is naturally curious, but he was insecure and confused.

The most important thing we ask him is to stay soft and give to pressure. He is doing so much better with being asked to do things, and showing much more of his curious side instead of fighting or running.
Taking things slow, we managed to get all four of his feet trimmed and Sprocket is getting more comfortable trusting us with holding up his feet for longer. He also accepts fly spray with minimal drama, and has gotten over his fear of people touching his legs and belly.

Now that we are moving along at a better pace with his training since his physical needs are sorted out, I'm looking forward to seeing what this little fella can accomplish! He is so cute and personable, with his curly mane and his lip wiggles when you scratch him. He's easy to catch, and easy to love, and now that he's feeling himself he's ready to take on the world!

Horses adopted are typically up to date on vaccines, dental floats, farrier care and all vet needs.

Horses are typically located in the Appalachian area, but please inquire about a horse's specific location when you apply!

We are looking to adopt to safe homes.

A history of good horsemanship, the ability to provide sufficient care with good vet, farrier and peer references are important. If you are a first-time horse owner, we will require you to board at a facility for the first year while you learn more about care. We encourage everyone to take advantage of riding lessons.

Foal adoptions require previous, established experience with youngsters.

Our adoption process makes sure you get the right horse for you – it is a no-fail process for finding the right match.

Apply at https://www.wvhorserescue.org/adopt

PLEASE NOTE: THE INQUIRY FORM ON THIS PAGE IS NOT THE HEART OF PHOENIX ADOPTION APPLICATION
