Paella's Story

Paella
2011
Arabian
Dark Bay
Mare
14 HH.

Brave & Athletic Trail Mare Perfect for a Confident Intermediate Rider!
If you love spending long hours in the saddle conquering rough terrain, this mare is looking for you! She is a brave, forward-moving horse who thrives when she has a job to do.
The Good Stuff:
She is an absolute machine on the trails. We ride in pretty rough, technical terrain, and she has never balked or refused a single obstacle we've come across. If you point her at it, she goes. She is also mostly very easy to catch in the pasture and has a sweet, cooperative nature.
Her Quirks & Ideal Match:
She seems to have a preference for women over men and responds best to a soft but confident hand. While she is incredibly brave, she does have her "Arab moments" here and there—she can be sensitive and reactive to her environment, so she is not a beginner's horse. She needs a confident intermediate rider who understands the breed's intelligence and energy.
Paella has had 110+ days of training with Maribeth Harrel. Follow her progress at #hopteampaella.

from trainer 8/10/25:

Paellas biggest hurdle to overcome was her confidence. The smallest things like fly spray, holding her feet in a different way, touching her butt out of her line of vision, and navigating new obstacles put her into a place of stress and panic. So to ride her for hours yesterday through various terrain and environments and tons of obstacles with such confidence and grace made me so happy for her that she is now living in a place of such peace. At this point in her training, I think her dream home could look like many different things. I think she has such an excellent work ethic that anything would make her happy as long as shes with a human who listens to her. Shes brave and honest and incredibly athletic and agile. She will get along best with a quiet rider with a light hand and leg who will trust her to travel on a loose rein. She is very simple and straightforward to ride. She disproves the stereotype of hot, spooky, crazy Arabian in every regard and I believe is a great example of what the breed is meant to be; she is loyal and gentle and will ride all day long if you ask her. On the ground she is safe as can be, she ties and cross ties, is good for farrier, excellent with any oral medications, trailer loads and travels well, happy to be stalled or outside, gets along with everyone Ive put her out with including mares and geldings, young horses, and minis, she is good for baths and fly spray, and has no known special considerations other than rider size. I would suggest a 180lb weight limit for her to keep her most comfortable.

I have not found her to be buddy sour or barn sour, and she is happy ridden alone or with others. I have not trail ridden her alone but I feel confident with more time shed be just fine there too. She has never offered to buck or rear and overall has been a very predictable ride. She has done a number of lessons with different riders and has 3 lovely gaits. Every now and then she will miss a lead but I presume that will dissipate with more practice. She does get a very sunburned nose easily so sunscreen and long nose fly mask is a must, and her conformation requires a specific saddle/pad/cinch combo to be most comfortable.

If youre interested in adopting Pie, please get your adoption applications in ASAP! this girl deserves the most loving home where shell be spoiled like the queen she is.

From trainer 7/10/2025:

Paella is very sensitive in a lot of ways and also lacks a lot of confidence so setting her up to be successful in everything she does requires some forethought but ultimately the amount of try this horse has far surpasses her worrisome nature. Her gaits are smooth and she naturally possesses a lot of body control and agility that I think will set her up to be successful in just about any riding style.

In true Arabian fashion, she has a lot of loyalty to people and in all of our work together no matter what happens, I've never felt like she's tried to ignore me or get out of work or put me in a bad situation. She is not a slow poke or lazy, and I find her to be very safe and reliable with a consistent demeanor. As you'll see in the video, she responds almost completely to vocal cues and is pretty focused on her job with plenty of desire to do what I ask.

In the coming weeks we'll be exploring different avenues to find what her dream life looks including hauling around to do some trail riding and obstacle courses, body control in arena work, and maybe we'll make it to a horse show!

#HOPTeamPaella is a 14h, 14 year old Arabian cross mare who is sound, gentle, and has no known vices at this time. If you're looking for your next partner, I would love to talk to you about her! Apply with Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, INC to bid on her in August at the Appalachian Trainer Face Off!

Horses typcally adopted UTD on vaccines, dental floats, farrier care and all vet needs.

Horse locations typically in Appalachia, but please inquire about a horses' specific location when you apply!

We are looking to adopt to safe homes.

A history of good horsemanship, the ability to povide sufficient care with good vet, farrier and peer references are important. If you are a first time horse owner, we will require you to board at a facility for the first year while you learn more about care. We encourage everyone to take advantage of riding lessons.

Our adoption process makes sure you get the right horse for you-it is a no fail process for finding the right match.
