Lucy's Story
Lucy is a Quarter Horse mare who has made tremendous progress during her time at GSH. When she arrived in 2023, she was anxious, insecure, and unsure about people—especially when separated from her equine companions. We gave her time to settle in, spending nearly a year in pasture with a steady herd, allowing her to rebuild confidence and watch our friendlier horses model how to interact with humans.

That slow approach paid off. Lucy is now friendly, respectful, and has a solid set of foundational skills. She participated in the 2024 Dakota Showdown Horse Trainer Challenge, where she made excellent progress in groundwork and light riding. When she showed some hesitation under saddle, we paused and had her fully vetted. X-rays and exams confirmed she’s in great shape—no signs of kissing spine, navicular, or other concerns. She’s healthy and cleared to continue training.

Lucy is ready for a confident, patient adopter who can help her continue her journey. She’s lightly started under saddle, and with her solid groundwork and thoughtful personality, she has a lot to offer the right partner.

Lucy’s Current Skills:
⭐ Catching, leading, and tying
⭐ Stands for grooming and fly spray
⭐ Picks up feet for the farrier
⭐ Accepts a bridle and surcingle
⭐ Working on accepting a saddle
⭐ Round pens nicely
⭐ Moves haunches and shoulders
⭐ Ridden bareback; working toward full saddling

Lucy is a sensitive and intelligent mare who benefits from consistency, clear boundaries, and kind handling. She’s not a blank slate—but she’s not stuck in the past either. She’s ready for someone to keep saying “yes” to her progress.
