Doty's Story

Meet Doty!

Doty is a beautiful 25-year-old chestnut Quarter Horse mare with a sweet personality, a little bit of sass, and quite the interesting history! In her younger years, Doty was a bucking horse and also spent some time raising babies. She never had a traditional riding career, and these days she's looking for a home where she can continue enjoying her golden years as a much-loved companion.

Doty is a sweet girl who absolutely loves a good grooming session, and if you're willing to give her some scratches, you'll have a pretty happy horse on your hands! She can be a little cautious about having her face touched, but with patience and gentle interactions, she's become much more comfortable with affection. She's easy to catch and lead, and she will often come to meet us halfway across the pasture when we whistle for her!

Doty has good ground manners and is a creature of habit who knows her daily routine, although she generally handles changes pretty well. She currently shares her pasture with another horse, sheep, goats, and geese. Within a herd, she tends to be a little more dominant than submissive but isn't overly pushy and would likely settle somewhere in the middle of the pecking order.

Doty is available as a companion horse only and is not suitable for riding. She was never trained as a riding horse and has physical limitations that make riding inappropriate. She has thin soles and less-than-ideal hoof structure, along with suspected age-related arthritis, although she generally gets around well in her current environment. She is currently kept barefoot with regular farrier trims. While she manages the rocky areas of our pastures reasonably well, softer footing would be more comfortable for her. Her new family will need to stay on top of her hoof care and monitor her comfort as she ages.

Doty receives a senior-focused feeding program to help support her nutritional needs, and her new family should be prepared to provide appropriate nutrition and routine care for an older horse. She will also need a home with another compatible horse for companionship, as horses are social animals who thrive with equine friends.

Doty may not be able to carry someone on her back, but she has so much to offer as a companion. With her sweet nature, love of scratches, and years of experience, we think she'd make a wonderful addition to a home looking to give a deserving senior mare a comfortable and loving retirement!
