Zeus's Story

Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement-Kennel License #2617

Could he do well with kids? Yes, with children around 8 years on a kid-by-kid basis.

Could he do well with other dogs? Zeus can be selective with other dogs. Multiple meets might be necessary.

Has this dog lived with cats? No. [The Lycoming County SPCA does not "cat test" dogs per the Association of Shelter Veterinarian's Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.]

---

What volunteers have to say about this animal:

Meet Zeus - Beautiful Survivor, Tennis Ball Fan, Professional Goofball

Zeus has had a rough start, and you can see some of it on him. He arrived with a head wound and other injuries that are still healing. But here's the remarkable thing about Zeus: he hasn't let any of that steal his joy.

This handsome American Staffordshire Terrier mix is energetic, playful, and wonderfully friendly. He's very much a dog who wants to get on with the business of being a dog-walking, playing, meeting people, and figuring out which toys are worth his time.

What Zeus Is Like:
- Happy, playful, and people-friendly
- Walks beautifully on leash
- Knows "sit"
- Loves tennis balls and stuffed toys
- Recovers well when he feels unsure
- Still discovering just how good life can be

Zeus can be a little overwhelmed by big groups of people, and he's still finding his footing in new situations. But give him some room and a little time, and his confidence comes back. He also has excellent taste in toys. The squeaky ones? Suspicious. The stuffed toy? Much better. A tennis ball flying through the air? Now we're talking.

Zeus was more cautious around other dogs, choosing to keep some distance and even using his person as a little safety zone. Given his history, that's understandable. He'll need thoughtful introductions and a home where he can continue learning that he doesn't have to be on guard.

Zeus's Ideal Home Looks Like:
- Kids around 8+, on a case-by-case basis
- Possibly another dog, with careful meet-and-greets
- People who will give him time to heal, physically and emotionally

Zeus is still mending, but he's already showing us something pretty wonderful: underneath the scars is a dog who wants to run, play, make friends, and enjoy his life. He's been through enough. Now we'd really like to see him get the happy part.

---

Condensed Staff Assessment Notes: Zeus was energetic and playful throughout his assessment. Despite moments of lack of confidence, he self-regulated well. He walked calmly on leash and knew the cue "sit". The squeaking toys confused him, but he eventually enjoyed playing with the stuffed toy and chasing the tennis ball.

While Zeus was actively engaged while being handled, he preferred to run around rather than settle. He was friendly when meeting strangers, but he felt overwhelmed by large groups of people. When introduced to another dog, he hesitated and chose to keep his distance, using my body as a barrier. It was clear due to Zeus's condition on intake that there had been quite a bit of infighting among the dogs in his previous home.

We may require additional steps in our process such as a home visit, permission from parents, or other additional requests. We appreciate your patience as we complete your adoption. Before adding a new member to your family, please consider the following: Many pets live 10 to 15 years. How old will you be? How old will your children be? Each breed of animal has genetic characteristics that need to be considered. Have you researched the breed that you are interested in? Are you financially prepared for a pet? Consider the following expenses: spaying or neutering, basic veterinary care, flea preventative, heart worm preventative, license, food, grooming.
