Zach's Story
Meet Zach, an almost 5-year-old, 64-pound Hound mix with a big heart, a goofy grin, and a whole lot of love to give.

Zach originally came to the shelter as part of a group of hounds and was adopted in 2023 into what we all hoped would be his happily-ever-after. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned, and Zach returned to our care in October 2025 when he and other dogs on the property needed help and a fresh start. Through it all, Zach has remained incredibly sweet, people-loving, and full of joy.

Zach recently spent time in a Snow Buddy foster home, where his affectionate and snuggly nature truly shined. He loves being close to his people, enjoys lounging on furniture, and is happiest when he’s getting attention and companionship. He is a very sweet boy who just wants time, consistency, and someone to call his own.

Because Zach didn’t have much structure early in life, he is still learning some of the basics of home living. He is currently working on house training and manners, including things like counter surfing and marking, and he will need an adopter who understands that these skills take time, patience, and consistency to develop. With routine and positive reinforcement, Zach is eager to learn and wants to please.

Zach has a classic hound nose and curiosity and enjoys exploring his surroundings. He does best in securely fenced areas and will need a home that is mindful about doors and outdoor access, as he’s happiest when his environment is set up to help him succeed. Leash skills and recall are still a work in progress, but with guidance, he has already shown he can learn.

Zach enjoys being outside, running around the play yards, and following his nose, but when it’s time to relax, he turns into a total softie — especially if there’s a comfy spot or a stuffed toy involved.

Zach has done well with other dogs, and meet-and-greets are required to ensure a good match. He previously lived with cats.

Zach would thrive in a home that offers patience, structure, and understanding, along with plenty of affection. If you’re looking for a loving, snuggly companion and are willing to help a sweet hound continue learning what it means to live the good life, Zach may be the perfect fit for you.

Zach is neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested, and fully vaccinated, including rabies, dewormed and on monthly preventatives.

Apply to adopt here:
https://orangecountyva.gov/159/Pet-Adoption-Foster-Care-Information
