Yoda's Story

Yoda is a special little guy who's going to need the right people to help him get over his past. Someone who has experience with a high anxiety dog with trust issues. And yes, his one ear is always up like that! He is also an olympic jumper and fence climber, so a 6 ft wood or vinyl fence is required. He can jump a 4 ft fence with ease and has climbed a 6 ft chain link.
It's clear he's been abused, he is reactive to strangers and is always on guard around anyone new. You have to prove to him that he can trust you and all it takes is time and patience.
Yoda was found with his brother and sister at an abandoned house. When he came to WARM he was an anxious mess who had to not only protect himself from all these new people, but also protect his brother and sister. After some time of sitting with him, talking to him, letting him smell you and taking treats from you, he slowly began to warm up. Now he is an absolute love to the people he trusts and enjoys sitting in their lap getting and giving kisses.
Yoda was recently adopted, but during his trial he ran away. He was scared of everything and everyone who tried to help and just ran, miles away from their home. He was caught 24 hrs later when a volunteer he knew got eyes on him. We realized it was too much too soon, Yoda was not ready for a home yet. It was nothing against the adopter, it truly was the perfect fit for him, but most times Yoda doesn't know what's good for him. Everything is a threat and scary. There were too many new things that overwhelmed him, so he wanted to always be outside to plan his perfect escape. So with his unknown past and trust issues, an approved adopter will have to come to the rescue numerous times to gain his trust and build a bond before he can be brought to their home. He needs to know you're his safe space before putting him in a new, but scary to him, environment.
Our adoption process requires an application, background check and home visit to be completed before any adoption is approved.

WARM - Waccamaw Animal Rescue Mission's Adoption Policy
To begin the adoption process, adopters are required to fill out an application form. Upon receipt a volunteer will conduct a background check with your current or former veterinarian. If a vet is not listed, please explain why. Once a background check has been conducted and approved, a volunteer will email you to set up a meet and greet with the animal you are interested in. If you are applying for a dog and currently have dogs, we do require you to bring them to the meet and greet so that we can see if they will be a good match together. If all goes well with the meet and greet, we then schedule a home visit. It is important that we approve the environment where our adoptees will live the rest of their lives. It's equally important that they meet other animals that live in the same home. Once the application, meet and greet, and home visit notes are reviewed by the Board of Directors, a volunteer will contact you regarding approval or non-approval. We appreciate your kindness, understanding, and patience in this process. Please remember we are volunteers doing this in our free time, so the process can take up to a week or more depending on our volunteers and your schedule. We can't stress enough that these animals have been through a lot in their lives before they came to the rescue. Their well-being comes first. It is very stressful for an animal to bounce from home to rescue to home to rescue, etc. Our goal is to find them their forever home and to not end up back in the system or ever have to relive what they’ve already been through.
