Winter-Adoption Pending!! Maltese & Poodle Mix Somerville, MA

Winter is a 3 year old, 8 pound Maltese mix who has had a tough life so far. She ended up at a shelter after being abused and kicked down the stairs by her previous owner. This poor dog was also born with a congenital eye disease called microphthalmia, which means her eyes did not grow normally, and as a result she cannot see. She does well getting around once she maps out her surroundings, but she needs to be watched around stairs and other potential obstacles.

Winter will need a special home with someone who will help her build up trust because she is leery of new people due to her past. That, coupled with her inability to see, makes her nervous and skittish around unfamiliar people and dogs. Winter needs time to feel comfortable and safe, and cannot be rushed or approached too quickly. If you give her the time to get to know you at her own pace, then she will start to show you her playful, loving side. She is a happy and affectionate dog once she feels at ease with her surroundings, but that takes a little time and patience. She was initially growly and nippy when she first arrived to her foster home, but now she is a sweet, cuddly dog who loves to sit in your lap. Winter will thrive in the right home and will be a fun companion!

Winter needs an adult only home that does not have a lot of people coming and going. She barks at unfamiliar voices and sounds, so an apartment dwelling would not be an ideal setting. Because she cannot see, leash walking is difficult for Winter, so a fenced in yard without hazards (pool, thorny rose bushes, etc.) would be best. She does okay with other small, mellow dogs, but would not feel comfortable with dogs that are active and/or don't respect her space. A dog savvy person who has experience and knowledge dealing with fearful dogs and/or blind dogs who is home for most of the day will be given preference.

Winter is housebroken, spayed, and up-to-date on her vaccines. She is an adorable little dog who deserves to have the best home after her awful beginning. Potential adopters will need to visit with Winter 2-3 times prior to adoption, so travel to the Waltham/Belmont MA area will be required. This is to help make the transition as easy as possible for her since she takes time to feel comfortable around new people. Winter's adoption fee is $500.
