-Winston in New England's Story
In New England

Back in April, we put out a call for a hospice home for a dog that was in one of our partner shelters. Winston wasn’t doing very well, & it seemed like he wouldn’t be around for much longer. A lovely couple stepped up to help. They had lost their old dog & wanted to help another dog in the months they had before leaving on a big international trip. Perfect!

Except…Winston had other ideas. Maybe it was all just a ploy to escape the shelter, or maybe it’s the abundant love, good food & wonderful home life they’ve given him, but Winston shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. So the time has come to find his forever home!

Winston is actually quite energetic & will chase butterflies, falling leaves or a new stick. He loves walks, toys, romping in the yard & snuggling. He is sweet, smart, knows commands & is eager to learn new things, especially if treats are involved. He LOVES to monitor activity outside the windows, wagging his tail as he notices bicycles or pedestrians. Winston really likes people & has been great with the larger dogs he’s met. He has a healthy prey drive, & when he was in the shelter, the staff said he wasn’t friendly to cats or small dogs. He can be a bit mouthy during play, so if he was to live with another dog, they would need good intros to be sure the dynamic worked. Leash skills aren’t his strong point, so ideally his adopter will work with him on that or have a fenced yard for him to explore.

As for his health, he is a lumpy bumpy old guy. He drinks & pees a lot, so we tested him for various conditions, & found that he doesn’t have Cushing’s, diabetes or at least one form of cancer. He will always tell his foster parents that he needs to go out, but if they aren’t paying attention or don’t get their shoes on quickly enough, he may not be able to hold it til they can get him out. That said, he sleeps in bed with them with no issues. An ultrasound showed some abnormality with his liver & gall bladder, so he is on a couple of support medications. Winston’s eyesight isn’t great, & occasionally when he grabs a ball, he will miss & get fingers, but he doesn’t chomp down, & it’s 100% accidental. Though he was quite underweight in the shelter, Winston has put on quite a few pounds & is now around 70 lbs. His mobility is very good.

His foster parents emphasize that Winston has a hilarious sweet personality & is becoming more & more snuggly by the day. He’s about 10 years old & would love to find someone who appreciates him & his quirks.
