Unfortunately, no (cats and squirrels seem the same to me)<br/>o Kids? 12+ if they are gentle and not too rambunctious or loud<br/><br/>History<br/><br/>[Trigger warning...mentions of violence below).<br/><br/>I don’t want to upset you with the details of my former living situation, so I will keep it brief and general. I lived for the past 5 years where my male owner was violent to the women in the home and when I would try to protect the women, he would turn his violence on me. He would be violent, then drag me to the barn and leave me tethered there without food and water. I would escape and run around town. Kind neighbors wanted to help but there was no dog shelter in my town, and the authorities said there was nothing they could do. Thank goodness my owner eventually moved away and left me behind so a neighbor could rescue me with the approval of town authorities and my new life of safety and happiness began! Life has been one amazing day after another since then!<br/><br/>Personality<br/>I am the goofiest, silliest, most lovingest, bestest friend you will ever have! I wake up each morning excited for what wonderful things I might get to do today. I love to share my joy with my friends, you might get a happy AROOO when you make my day! I just know that my forever home is right around the corner!<br/><br/>In the house: <br/>I know how lucky I am to be in a safe, happy home so I am very well behaved around the house and love relaxing at home. I love to snooze on my bed or snuggle with my people, but I wait to be invited on the couch with you and am respectful if told “not right now.”<br/><br/>I am completely house trained (no accidents, even when I go to the dog sitters!). I am trustworthy at night and when you are gone, I am great in a dog safe area of the house, and will happily snooze on my bed or in my crate. I do not bother your shoes, furniture, or other items that aren’t mine. Since getting rescued and having regular meals, I am less interested in recycling, trash, and other good smelling items on counters, but...if you leave the house and leave food out on counters or tables, I might think you left them FOR ME...so don’t do that!<br/><br/>Out and about: <br/>I walk nicely on a leash! I value my daily walk and sniffy time and love to roll around in the grass! I know how to walk calmly at your left side and am good at calmly passing people and other dogs. I love car rides and going to calm, spacious new places! <br/><br/>I love to play off leash in a fenced yard with you, but will be nervous if you leave me outside for too long, due to my history. <br/><br/>Things that are still scary for me: <br/>If I feel trapped, confined, or held by strangers I get scared. Most of the time you can avoid putting me in those situations, but not always. For example, at the vet’s office I was in a cramped room and needed to be held (for blood draws, physical exam, etc). They were gentle and gave me breaks and had me wear a muzzle (like many dogs do!) to give everyone confidence the exam would go well. This was a hard situation, but I did great and was happy to get cookies and be petted by the vet after the pressure of the exam was over! You can tell when I get overwhelmed because I get stiff, look away from the thing worrying me, and may give a warning growl or bark. Giving me a break, more space, or asking for easy behaviors and rewarding me heavily with cookies helps immensely! <br/><br/>I need a family who can share their confidence with me and manage these situations calmly and wisely. I am learning to deal with my big feelings, but still need help! I do not hold a grudge and am back to my happy-go-lucky self very quickly as soon as I feel safer. <br/><br/>Due to my past, I may get worried and want to intervene if I see people wrestling, a dog jumping on you too rambunctiously, or if it looks like a human snuck up on another for a surprise hug. I also can feel nervous if new people surprise me or come on too strong with their eye contact and approach. And like LOADS of dogs, I bark at bicycles and sometimes at fast runners, but I recover quickly and don’t try to chase. I have shown great improvement with these stressors and need a person who will keep helping me here! <br/><br/>Favorite Activities<br/><br/>Here is a list of things that I love: <br/>1) Cookies!<br/>2) Tossing and pouncing on my lamb stuffie toy!<br/>3) Learning new things (for cookies!)<br/>4) Snuggling with my people!<br/>5) Getting dried off with a towel after swimming or a rainy walk. This brings out my happy AROOOOOO!<br/>6) Good people who allow me to introduce myself first!<br/>7) Being told I am a very good boy (because I am!)!<br/>8) Going for an adventure – walks, car rides, swimming and more! <br/><br/>Health: <br/>I am in great health, which is a miracle given what I have been through, and how malnourished I was when rescued! I’m now even a little plump (yay!) and was just at the vet again for a check-up and she says, “looks great!” I am up to date on vaccines, and am on flea/tick/heartworm prevention.<br/><br/>Once I know and trust you, I am happy to let you brush me, touch my face and paws, and tell me I’m handsome. I am good for baths and LOVE being dried off with a towel after! I am good about my front nails being carefully trimmed and am learning to be more comfortable with my back ones.<br/><br/>Cohabitation<br/>I would love a fun, happy, calm home! <br/><br/>I think I could be ok with older children who are very respectful of my space and needs and act predictably with no rough housing or wrestling.<br/><br/>I would be thrilled to be your only dog, but if you have a nice, polite, calm, gentle, friendly dog–that might be great too, I would be very happy to meet them! No hyper, jumpy or loud dogs please.<br/><br/>Why I am looking for a new home<br/>I have never had a loving home of my own, but I have had some amazing rescue and foster homes on my journey! These wonderful people are helping me to become the best Winnie-the-Pooch I can be, and they promise that they will find me the bestest cat-free, calm, loving, joyful, wonderful home of my own! <br/><br/>Summary<br/>My foster mom says, “Winnie is the bestest boy! Joyful, smart, so happy, so forgiving, so resilient and so silly! He just wants to feel safe and to please his people, to share love and joy and a peaceful life. He expresses himself with happy howls and has the best facial expressions, he makes me laugh all the time and brings joy to every single day. He would do best with a loving, confident, consistent person who will love him deeply and help him continue to gain confidence and feel safe.”<br/><br/>Winston’s dream home would be with a single person, couple, or family, who are loving and gentle and whose living situation is generally calm and peaceful.
