Meet Winnie, a stunning 3 yr old shepherd mix with a big heart and even bigger smarts. She’s still figuring out the world around her, but with the right family, she’s going to absolutely thrive.

Personality & Temperament
Winnie is a classic shepherd—alert, thoughtful, and independent, but incredibly loving with her people. She may be cautious when faced with new situations or strangers, but once she knows she’s safe, she warms up quickly. She’s not one to be in your lap all the time, but she loves to be close and involved in whatever you’re doing.

Training & Behavior
This girl is wicked smart. In just a few weeks, she picked up verbal commands, hand signals, and respectful house manners. She went through an agility course after the first try! She knows her boundaries (like staying out of certain rooms or waiting patiently by the dinner table during mealtimes), and she listens exceptionally well to a calm, confident leader. She's not food- or toy-aggressive, waits politely for her meals, and you can take a toy from her without a fuss.

She’s housebroken, rides well in the car, respects routines, and is even patient when it’s time to towel off muddy paws. She's familiar with the crate and goes in voluntarily to rest.

Activity Level & Ideal Environment
Winnie has a moderate-to-high energy level and needs regular exercise and mental stimulation. She enjoys tug-of-war, chasing toys, and zooming around the house. She would love a fenced yard where she could stretch her legs and enjoy the outdoors, but she's just as happy with an occasional walk in the park. She’s walked on leash 3 times a day and does well with a Martingale collar, although she’ll need some guidance when deer catch her eye.

She’s not suited for apartment life or very long hours alone and would do best in a home where someone is around more often than not, especially during the adjustment period.

Other Pets & People
Winnie currently lives with a cat and while they're not BFFs yet, they have developed a mutual respect and have learned to share the house - and even the water bowl! She’s met young children and handled it well, showing gentleness and patience. When it comes to other dogs, she’s a bit of a wild card — she’s barky and reactive on leash, but off leash she has approached other dogs calmly and not aggressively. She would ideally prefer to be an only dog, but could certainly share her humans with the "right" canine companion. Continued training and controlled exposure would help her grow more confident in this area.

Why You'll Love Her
She’s beautiful, low-maintenance in the home, and deeply respectful once she trusts you. She’s not demanding, doesn’t beg, doesn’t have accidents, and understands the household rhythm. She’ll lie in the sun at your feet while you read a book or hang on the porch, soaking up the day. She'll sit next to you on the couch while you watch TV and lie on the floor while you work on the PC. She'll jump in the bed when the alarm goes off but hang with you during the "snooze" time if it's one of those mornings. She's also young, healthy, and ready to be someone’s long-term companion.

Bonus:

She respects boundaries and routines

Loves belly rubs and hanging out with her people

Excellent with toys and a strong chewer (Kongs and ropes are her jam)

Physically stunning — she turns heads with her sleek coat and Belgian Malinois-style looks

Short hair so very easy to groom

The perfect mid-size at 50 lbs

Winnie isn’t just a dog — she’s a partner and a deeply rewarding best friend in the making. With structure, patience, and love, she’s going to become something truly special. If you're looking for a loyal, smart, and stunning pup to grow with, come meet her — you just might be her perfect match.

EVERY DOG HAS A STORY: Winnie and her puppies were found as strays. BFPA was happy to admit them. All her cute puppies have been adopter. So now it is her turn to find her forever home.

Some of the information contained in this biography includes approximations based on our expertise and is not guaranteed. Applicants should live no further than one hour from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care prior to adoptions being finalized. Our foster guardians deliver dogs to their new homes for adoption trials and we do home visits to finalize all adoptions. We therefore prefer applicants that live within an hours drive of Cary NC. For the perfect home, we would consider a little further away.

INTERESTED IN ADOPTING WINNIE?
