Wilby's Story

Intake date 31 July 2025 .
grey and white hard (wire) coated neutered male mix , 3-4 years old, 38lbs (under weight). .
So, Sarah has a wee bit of egg on her face at the moment regarding Wilby. She was convinced that he was a wire/hard coated border collie which is an uncommon, though possible coat type in the breed. He's border collie size, and shape, as well as being super quirky -- only he's just 16% border collie. . Wilby was pulled from a shelter where he had been relinquished due to his family losing housing. He was completely shut down in the shelter, though came around very quickly with his first foster. Quickly, as in minutes after he arrived in her home! . Wilby is most definitely a port in the storm dog -- he has one or two people that he adores in his circle, and no one else really matters. We feel that Wilby's world was really small before he was relinquished and transitions can be a bit bumpy for him. We've taken it gently with slow intros and gradual intros to other dogs -- he is worried about dogs larger than he is and will charge and bark at them, though that is the extent of his negative response. He's rude and loud though not a danger. Anyone interested in adopting Wilby should be prepared to continue to work through this. We do believe Wilby could be an only dog with humans who are around a lot, though he would definitely benefit from dog friends in the home that are calm and confident. . Wilby is crate trained, rides nicely while crated in a vehicle, walks reasonably on leash. Wilby will bark at cats, so is not a dog to live with cats without a human partner who wants to invest the time. Children are unknown. He is a quick learner, and for the most part does want to please, though he does need someone interested in creating partnership through relationship based training. .

This dog is located in Maryland - we do not ship or transport dogs. For information on adoption, an FAQ, and our application, please see our website at mabcr.org. If you are interested in adoption, please submit an application, complete with documentation. . Dogs that have not lived previously with children will not be offered to homes where young (generally under 12) children reside. We do not 'test' dogs with children or cats, since testing here will not show an accurate picture, and may give potential adopters false comfort. If a dog has lived with children or cats, that will be stated in their description. We do begin crate training all dogs on intake, however, we do not guarantee housebreaking, though most dogs are at a minimum, situationally housebroken. . We do not place dogs as ESA, nor will we place a dog as hypo-allergenic. Applicants interested in adoption of a potential service dog must be actively working with an experienced trainer. Please indicate on the application what skills a potential service dog will be asked to perform. . In general, we do not DNA test our dogs in residence. If we do not know a dogs genetic background, we will not advertise it as such, and would prefer that folks not 'guess' publicly. . Please note that some dogs may be placed with an alter deposit and contract, and any dog of any age may be placed with a training deposit and contract -- this would be noted on offer, prior to placement. For additional information on these policies, please see our website. . Questions about dogs are generally not answered here due to lack of staffing. All available dogs may not be listed on our website due to time constraints and does not effect a specific dog's availability. Additional information and photos will be posted here as time permits.
