Widget's Story

Sex: Female
Age: ~9 months
Weight: ~35 pounds
Energy: Moderate
Drive: Moderate
Location: Victor, Idaho

Is your life feeling a little dull? Consider spicing it up with petite, beautiful Widget. Prancing around with her dinner bowl in her mouth, she's guaranteed to make you laugh—until she tries it with her water bowl. Even though she's shy at first, really she loves to be the center of attention, and would probably be a teenage pop star diva if she were human. Her singing is especially fine when sirens pass by.

Once she knows you're hers, Widget is devoted and extremely affectionate. In fact, her number one favorite thing is snuggling up for petting. Food runs a close second; she's happy to learn just about anything if there's the promise of a tasty morsel in reward. It doesn't take much—a squirt of water, a gently voiced correction—to redirect her typical puppy behavior such as chewing, jumping, having an occasional accident inside, or getting up close and personal with what's on your counters. Her manners are improving by the day; now she knows to stay out of the kitchen, wait her turn to be fed, not beg for food, and walk nicely on a leash. She uses a dog door, too. The crate is not her favorite place, but she'll tolerate it if she must. However, she'd much prefer to stay in the yard with other dog friends when you're gone.

Although she loves to play with other dogs, Widget does need to work on being more respectful in certain situations. When you come home, when you get the food out, when she wants all the pets for herself, she tends to be snappy with them. She's responding quickly to corrections on that behavior. Presumably she would be open to corrections with livestock, but at this point she barks at them through a fence. Her reactions to cats are untested. Kids on a hiking trail don't bother her. She'll pull against the leash to resist new situations, but she relents quickly and figures out how to adapt. In general she's a confident dog, not timid but cautious. Even fireworks and other loud noises don't bother her, although she's protective and likes to bark at things it might be important to point out.

Widget is willing to chase balls, but she doesn't seem too obsessed with them. With such moderate drive she's not a likely candidate for serious work or competition, but she's perfect as a loyal and fun companion. She'll need a home where she can have lots of toys to chew on and get lots of exercise. Other dog friends and a big yard would be perfect, as would a human who can devote time to continued obedience training and who might let her sleep with them or at least who loves to snuggle. Widget's sweet nature and eagerness to learn and cooperate will make her a treasured friend in either a calm or a crazy-busy home.

WEST COAST ADOPTIONS ONLY

Must have previous or current, purebred Malinois experience OR other high drive working breed experience

Please fill out an application on woofproject..org

Our adoption process includes- completion of an application, followed by a telephone interview. If that goes well, we will arrange for a home visit.
Adoption Fee: $375.00. Transport along Interstate 5 (Bakersfield, CA to Bellingham, WA) is available but cost not included in adoption fee.
