Wiaka's Story

We cannot believe this handsome guy is still with us!! Meet Wiaka!

Wiaka (which means Feather in Lakota Sioux), is a 10 month old Border Collie/Heeler and possibly Airedale mix who came to our rescue from an overcrowded rescue in South Dakota, where he narrowly missed being euthanized.

At 45 pounds, Wiaka is cute and cuddly, with a unique curly, soft coat. He's exceptionally gentle and affectionate with people of all ages, loves playing with other dogs, and is gentle and friendly with cats. Whether it's exploring, playing, or just being chilling by your side, Wiaka is all in. He's fantastic on and off leash, crate trained, and loves car rides and hikes, or just out by the wood stove.

Wiaka has a somewhat awkward gait and periodic limp due to unusually stiff joints for such a young dog. After x-rays and various texts, it has been determined that this is likely due to a birth defect. This doesn't slow him down, and he doesn't have any exercise restrictions, though he does become stiffer in the evenings after a full day of play and fun.

To help him be comfortable, he has been prescribed Gabapentin as needed, especially on more active days. Wiaka takes this all in stride, as he's active and outgoing, and knows when to take periodic breaks to recharge throughout the day.

What matters most is that Wiaka is a super affectionate, gentle, loyal, happy boy with a huge heart. He will thrive in a home that understands and helps him with his minor disability, loves and supports him, and appreciates his incredible spirit. If you are looking for a young, adventurous, loyal companion with a loving soul, Wiaka is waiting to join you.

Please message or call us at 307.360.6000 for more information or if you would like to meet him.
