Wapiti's Story

Meet Wapiti!Wapiti is a playful, affectionate coonhound/pointer mix with striking good looks and a personality to match. At about 60 pounds and born around January 1, 2024, this young pup is ready to find his forever family.

Named after the Shawnee word for white rump elk, Wapiti was found near Elk Creek Lakeand like his namesake, hes a graceful jumper. He can clear a 3-foot gate with ease, so a home with a 5-foot fence would be best. He would love to have a doggy companion to run and play with him in the yard.

Wapiti loves staying active and would thrive with a family that enjoys walks, outdoor adventures, and playtime. Hes also a big fan of belly rubs and couch cuddles, striking a great balance between energy and affection.

Smart and eager to please, hes learning his manners and already knows how to sit, come, and lay downhis version of lying down includes a slow, charming slide to the floor. He has a distinct, endearing howl when he spots squirrels or rabbits.

Wapiti gets along well with the resident dog and cats in his foster home, and he recently passed his first visit to doggie daycare with flying colors. Hes not yet a fan of car rides or being crated, but his foster is helping him build confidence through gentle desensitization.

As a typical young pup, Wapiti enjoys chewing, so a good supply of sturdy chew toys and natural chews is a must.

Wapiti is neutered, microchipped, crate trained, and up to date on vaccines.

If youre looking for a loyal, active companion with a gentle heart and a goofy grin, Wapiti may be the one for you.

If you are interested in adopting an ARPO pet, please visit our website at arporescue.org to learn more about our adoption process and complete our adoption application. ARPO limits adoptions to within 50 miles of Indianapolis. We do not have a shelter; all pets are in volunteer foster homes.

Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership, Inc - ARPO's Adoption Policy
ARPO does not have a shelter or physical location. All pets are in foster care. Potential adopters must fill out the Adoption Application. An phone or e-mail interview and home visit are required and does not guarantee adoption. We use these as a tool to make a match for both the adoptive family and the pet. Because home visits are done by a member of our all volunteer staff, we limit this to a 50 mile radius of Indianapolis. Lastly, before taking your new companion, a contract must be signed, including the provision that the adopter will provide quality food, shelter, and medical care. You may follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/adoptarpo/ to find out when and where our next adoption events, fundraisers, success stories, as well as hints and tips in pet care.
