Velvet's Story

Barks and Meows Rescue introduces Mommy Velvet. She came to us from another Rescue, via a Reserve up near Sudbury. She gave birth to two puppies the day before she arrived in our care, but one had already passed. Baby Denim was born on Mar 21. Velvet has medium-length fur and is full-grown at 53 lbs.

Velvet was a wonderful Mom to Baby Denim. It is not easy for a Mom to raise a singleton puppy as they are more needy than if they have siblings. She was a pro and Baby Denim has turned out beautiful. Velvet has a very good recall and can go off-leash at cottages and on hikes once she bonds with her new family. If our breed mix is accurate, it accounts for her high level of intelligence. She plays very well with other dogs and still loves to play with toys. She is housebroken and enjoys playing outside.

Velvet does very well in the vehicle. She will require more leash work because she has a big property at her foster home in the country so doesn't go out for walks. Velvet knows her basic commands and is nice and quiet. We know that Velvet did not come to us as a feral dog. We believe she was a house dog, or family dog on the Reserve. She had no problem adjusting to being an indoor dog and it was obvious it was something she was used to.

Velvet does enjoy children and will bond with a family with children very quickly. Due to her sweet and gentle nature, she will make an excellent family companion. She is quiet and loving with everyone she meets. She is great with both men and women.

The ideal home for Velvet is one with a family. She really enjoys being with all her family members. She does not require crating and cuddling up on the couch with her foster dad is one of the highlights of her day. We do not know how she is with cats so a cat-free home is best. Velvet's breed mix is meant to have lots of outside time with her family, not by herself. Hiking, going to dog beaches or cottages would be fabulous.

Velvet is spayed, and up to date with vaccines, including Bordetella and Lepto. She has been microchipped, Her 4dx test showed positive results for Lyme so she was treated with 30 days of Doxycycline. Velvet also had some teeth removed during her spay.

A cat-free home (just in case) is mandatory to apply for our Velvet. Her adoption fee is $250.

Visit barksandmeows.ca for an online application. Available to Ontario Residents only!!!
