Vanessa's Story
Vanessa is a 6.5 year old 130 lb easy going house guest with a strong yet consistent temperament that endears her to everyone she meets. Also endearing is her choice to be near you, on top of you, leaning on you, or pushing into you. While she may be standoffish for a moment on meeting new people (and give a deep hufffff) she soon warms up and ingratiates herself to these new friends. For an extra large, older girl Vanesa has a floaty gait that is much younger than her years and she is ready to go for a good walk when you are/ready for downtime when you are. Whether it's one walk a day or three, she maintains the same zen energy when in the house.

Vanessa is a matriarch with a bit of old sea captain mixed into her personality. It isn't so much that she is a top female, but she has most likely been the lead dog in her previous life where she was free roaming in the country with her adult pups. This lifestyle ended with her and two of her offspring being relinquished to animal control and from there, into the Northern Dogs Project. She understands the hierarchy of the dogs in her foster home and knows where she fits - she can't pass Alphie if he's lying in the doorway but she can get up on the couch with Paddington even if he's there first.

Vanessa is happily fostering with male and female dogs who range from large to very small and she has fit right in with the dog gang. She is also living with cats and is totally trustworthy with them. Vanessa would be happy to have other dogs or cats in her new home but she is more a people person so she will likely coexist with them rather than be a playmate. Because she has a strong forward greeting style with new dogs and will stiffen and give a growl, she is best suited to a country home where she can have a set friend group and not be expected to meet lots of new dogs on walks. She can be intimidating to people and dogs who don't know her so it's best to have control over when and how she meets new dogs. Suburbia and city life have too many random dog greetings for this country girl.

Vanessa is open about her affection for her people and will show it in tactile ways. This means lying on the couch if they are on the couch, lying on the bed if they are on the bed (pressed against them), lying near the chair they are in, putting her head in their lap, and even being in their lap. She is very affectionate and she likes to be physically touching her people and having her people physically touching her. This is not something that Vanessa is going to do immediately with her new people but when she is ready, this girl is all about demonstrating affection. When she knows you, she enjoys being cuddled and hugged and will make groaning noises to express her contentment.

Vanessa very much likes access to the outside and she goes from inside the house to outside into the yard, pounding on the door to go out and to come back in. She is not a wanderer when she is free on her foster's acreage and sticks close to the house while checking out all the sniffs. She really likes her offleash walks and this winter weather is suiting her just fine as she makes snow angels and explores.

Vanessa will thrive with a guardian who is experienced with extra large breeds and who wants to get to know a gorgeous, loving, interesting being. Vanessa can be intimidating to people not used to big, free thinking dogs with a vocal repertoire that includes barks, huffs, purrs and growls. She is a strong girl with her own mind and sense of self and she is able to make what she wants happen simply because of her size. If she wants to go over there, she will drag you with her - she is 130 lbs after all! But underneath the big dog exterior lives an even bigger softy with a huge heart and an extremely loving nature.

This country loving girl is secure and confident and has an air of wisdom and intelligence that comes from her age and previous lifestyle. She has had time to fully decompress and share her true self with her foster family who love her to bits. To know Vanessa is to love Vanessa!

Vanessa is up to date on vaccinations, spayed, dewormed, and microchipped. Her adoption fee $750. Vanessa is being fostered in Caledon.

Adoption process includes application, virtual home visit, phone interview, reference check, meet & greet, adoption contract and $750 adoption fee.

Vanessa is being adopted out in partnership with Happy's Place - Retirement Home for Dogs.

***Fill out the ADOPTION APPLICATION at:
https://signup.ifaw.org/en-ca/northern-dogs-adoption-application-form
