Valkyrie (Val)'s Story
“Valkyrie” (Val) is an approx 45-lb (very petite), 2-yo spayed female GSD who is sweet, energetic and loyal. Val is very bonded with the 4-yo neutered male GSD mix (“Dutch”) who she lives with, so we are seeking a home that will keep both Val & Dutch together.

Val is very friendly with people, both at home and away, though she is somewhat timid at first. She alarm-barks when a stranger is at the door but otherwise is not a very assertive watch dog. Val is easy-going and great with young children; she takes treats very gently from hand.

Val is very good with other dogs and especially likes little dogs; she loves playing with the Maltese belonging to her person’s daughter. Val was great with the other dogs she met at GSRSV’s rescue ranch (see elsewhere on this page for a video). Val is good when visiting a dog park.

Val has not been around cats since her person (Jennifer) adopted her two years ago. Though in my opinion Val has the right temperament to be OK w/ cats, we will give preference to a home without cats as there is still some risk placing Val & Dutch in a home with cats.

Val is housetrained and calm inside. Though she has not received any formal obedience training since Jennifer adopted her, she is quite well-behaved overall. Val stays outside when her people are gone for more than an hour, but is otherwise allowed inside. She sleeps on her own bed in Jennifer’s room.

Val walks very good on leash. She loves to go for rides in the car and is a polite passenger.

Val likes to play chase and to carry around stuffed toys. She also likes to splash around in a kiddie pool, so might be a swimmer if given a chance.

Jennifer adopted both Val & Dutch from the Stanislaus County animal shelter in April 2019. She had gone to the shelter to adopt just Dutch, but when she saw Val—very thin and shut down--she just had to adopt her, too. Jennifer really loves Val & Dutch, but she is experiencing serious mobility issues and is not able to walk both dogs. Further, her fragile, elderly father will soon be moving in with her, and the two young, active dogs will pose a physical risk to him. Sadly, Jennifer is seeking a new home for Val & Dutch—-with both dogs remaining together.

GSRSV has met Val & Dutch and is placing them as “Program Dogs.” This means that Jennifer will continue to care for Val & Dutch while GSRSV places the two dogs through its regular adoption program--with all of the assurances that GSRSV provides dogs in its own care.

Val & Dutch are located in Modesto. Their adoption fee is $400 (together).
