Valkyrie's Story

Valkyrie is a sweet, friendly 1yr old, 41-pound, shepherd mix who was owner surrendered through no fault of her own after her owner lost his home. She’s now looking for a new family to give her the love, stability, and companionship she deserves.

This girl is full of personality and loves being around people! Valkyrie knows sit, down, and focus/watch me, loves treats, and takes them gently. She can get excited when she sees people or other dogs while walking, but she responds well to redirection.

During her temperament evaluation, Valkyrie made it pretty clear that people are more exciting than toys! She is silly, energetic, and loves interacting with her handlers. She also did wonderfully with full-body handling and remained comfortable while her paws, ears, tail, collar, and body were touched. Even when she wasn't quite sure what to think about hugs, she remained sweet and tolerant.

Valkyrie also showed no resource guarding concerns with either food or valued items. Evaluators were able to interact with her food and take possessions from her without an issue.

When it comes to canine friends, Valkyrie seems to appreciate dogs who respect her personal space and allow her to get acquainted at her own pace. During her dog introductions, she was initially a little unsure and chose to walk away rather than engage. When one dog continued trying to sniff and interact with her, Valkyrie simply communicated that she needed a little more space. Her evaluator noted that she may interact differently with a more submissive canine companion. A calm meet-and-greet and slow introduction would be the best way to help Valkyrie find a dog friend whose personality complements hers. We aren't sure how long her and her owner were homeless; we don't know if she felt she needed to be on-guard at all times. With more exposure and socializations (and taking her young age into account), this can definitely be worked through with positive reward system.

Valkyrie also had a great interaction with our office cat, Sunshine! She gave her a sniff and then happily went about her business. She was easily redirected and was assessed as likely cat-friendly.

Overall, Valkyrie is a friendly, goofy, people-loving girl whose life changed when her owner lost his home. She didn't do anything wrong—she simply needs someone new to love.

Come meet Valkyrie and give this sweet girl the fresh start she deserves!
