Valentine's Story

She's shy, she's submissive, she's sweet, and she's a sheltie.

Meet Valentine!

This 5-7 year old, 23 lb Shetland Sheepdog was rescued from a puppy mill, along with over 420 other neglected dogs. She was kept in a small, concrete pen her whole life. She, for the first time ever, is learning how to be a dog.

When we first saved Valentine, she would walk in circles, aimlessly, for hours... like a wild animal trapped at a zoo. Shelties are known for their incredible intelligence and sensitivity: life in confinement withered her to a shell of a dog. She would become paralyzed with fear when you'd walk into the room, not moving a muscle except to drool. She wouldn't even blink. She does not fight or flight: she freezes.

Since entering foster care, she's really started to come out of her shell. She really benefits from the company of confident dogs to show her the ropes. She even has started doing zoomies and play bows with them. She is crate trained, housebroken, and over all easy to handle (nail trims, baths, brushing, vet exams etc). She is good with both male and female dogs, as well as ignoring cats.

That being said, she is timid and very submissive. She is a work in progress, and looking for someone willing to invest the time she needs to shine: Someone who is regularly home and can make themselves present around the house.

She is very food driven and dances for her food bowl at dinner time; when taking treats from your hand, she will bite your whole finger quite hard. She is a gentle, sweet soul but does not understand the concept of taking treats gently. She would do best in a mature, quiet, patient home without young kids. She would not hurt a fly, but the excitement of a home with children would probably overwhelm her.

She might be small and flashy-looking, but please only apply if you are serious, and understand she will need love, patience, and training to live up to her full potential. She did come from a puppy mill as a disposable breeder dog, living outdoors in appalling conditions. Her teeth are rotted (she needed 5 pulled and a full dental during her spay), and came to us with a very matted with urine-stained coat. We trimmed out her mats and had her professionally groomed several times, but her coat will continue to need more maintenance and is quite full, even for her breed.

We do accept out of state applications, but adopters are responsible for expenses related to transport. We adopt to the US (including Hawaii) and Canada. She is currently in Austin, Tx.

To see more videos of Valentine, follow us on Instagram @herdinghomerescue

To apply to adopt Valentine, apply via our website, HerdingHomeRescue.com/adopt

NOTE: We only accept inquiries via our website, NOT Petfinder.
