Twizzler's Story

Twizzler is an active, athletic, mixed breed of about 18 months old and 55 pounds. She is highly food motivated and scent oriented (nose work anyone?), but she can also be distractible and dopey and maybe even a little special. And she thinks cats are for chasing. Chickens too. Twizz came to Dogwood from our friends at the Dublin shelter. We think this cutie could be a Doberman/Cattle Dog mix. Two loyal, active, intelligent and highly trainable breeds. She's an energetic, social girl and she loves to play. She will thrive in an active home with exercise and leadership to bring out her best.

While she's still a frisky youngster growing up in foster care, Twizz is also starting to settle and mature. Her foster home has multiple dogs, cats, foster dogs coming and going. Things like plenty of exercise, crating and tie-down indoors, make her super easy to manage in the sometimes chaotic foster home.

A word about Twizz from foster mom.

"I am Twizz's foster mom. She has lived in our home for almost a year. 11 months this week, in fact. I just took her to the vet for her rabies vaccine booster today and it kind of broke my heart. She was such a good girl, but it killed me because it means she's been in the system and unadopted for an entire year. She had her first rabies shot while in a crowded shelter a year ago and came to us soon after.

Twizz is really no trouble in a situation like mine where she can sleep all night quietly crated indoors, and then go out in the morning to play with an ever changing cast of other foster dogs and resident dogs. Some of the resident dogs have passed away from age related causes in the long time Twizz has been here. And countless foster dogs have come and gone to adoption since Twizz arrived.

Why don't you keep her, you might ask? Honestly, I adore her and if she never gets adopted, she could live out her lives with us. But it's not what's best for her, or us Here she's one of 10-20 other dogs. Her needs are met, but she doesn't get a lot of individual attention, although I sometimes take her with me to run errands so she has a change in routine. She's a great road dog. Also, we have 3 cats. I manage her to make it work, but she really needs a home without cats. And my husband's elderly mother lives with us and has advanced dementia. Her care needs continue to increase, leaving less time for the dogs. And she takes a space we could use to rescue the next dog in need. Lastly, adopting Twizz will make space to save the life of another dog in desperate need.

So for all those reasons, I continue to hope and pray and manifest a wonderful, loving home for Twizz."

*Twizz loves people.
*She's house trained.
*She's crate trained, but happy to sleep with you if you'd prefer.
*She's a fun road dog, great in the car.
*Great at the vet and groomer.
*Great hiking and exercise buddy.
*Great couch companion, settles beautifully after exercise.
*Loves to play with other dogs.
*Good sport if you want to dress her up for holidays.

Are you Twizzler's hero?
