Trixie's Story
TRIXIE

Trixie is a Border Collie - Idaho Shag Mix dog, age 3 years and 7 months old. She entered the Powder Pals dog training program at the state prison in Baker City, Oregon on April 22, 2025. Trixie lived in an adjoining county where her life was confined to a small yard and very limited exercise and socializing, in a very quiet rural setting. Needless to say, she was very hungry for attention and daily activities. Her friend Robin facilitated her entry into our program. With trainers working with her 7 days a week she has responded and flourished in her new environment. And what a change it was for her to get used to. Lights, hundreds of people, vehicles nearby. Sirens of ambulances and life flight helicopters traveling to the local hospital nearby. She made the adjustment quite well.
Trixie’s most striking attribute is that she is super friendly to all humans. Actually, extremely eager to meet anyone and show her appreciation for their attention. This made her an instant celebrity to all who work or live in the prison. And it remains her signature trait. One cannot have a bad day around Trixie, her eyes beaming and her tail wagging as she sees you approaching.
Over the past 3 months of training, she has developed some 20 cues or obedience commands. This shows her intelligence and eagerness to learn. Trainers spent a uniquely good deal of time first coaching her into a longer attention span whereby she could learn to work with her human team, and not simply fall back to finding ways to entertain herself daily. We now have a super friendly, well trained dog. And given our training was positive reward only, no force or punishment, she will continue to learn new cues to please her human in the years ahead.
She is potty trained (she will whine or bark when she needs to go potty) and current on her shots. And spayed. She is very healthy and active. She loves leash walks. She is also crate trained.
She should be an only dog in her forever home, at least initially. If there is another dog it should be an older, low energy dog. She is reactive to high energy dogs. And no small animals. She exhibits a prey drive towards cats and we interpret other small animals as well. And one should use caution in where she is leash walked, if other dogs are in the same area. It appears her time alone from her past made her very jealous of other dogs receiving attention. Trainers have worked on this and she is showing progress in playing with several dogs. These are dogs who have the skills to be around her and not be dominated by her. She enjoys them. But this is a work in progress.
Her leash walking is reasonably good. She will occasionally stop and not move. Given she has taken on so much change and learning in just 3 months her leash walking with her forever person will likely lead to her improving. Her favorite activity is playing around a water sprinkler.
Her ideal home is living indoors with her person or people. Hanging out with them and laying near them for the companionship it offers her. It also involves going outside to well fenced yard to exercise daily. She is well trained and will continue to expand her skills and compliance with the consistency of her family. And she will greet any human she meets in a friendly manner.
Please consider sharing life with this special dog. She is ready for her next chapter in her life.
