Tor's Story
Tor was adopted as a pup by his family. After 2 years, when their circumstances changed, they returned him to his original home. Unfortunately, the family's dogs wouldn't tolerate him in their yard and began ganging up on him. He has been in foster care since April 2022.

With a guesstimated birthday in Feb. 2020, Tor weighed 65 lb at his vet visit in August 2025. He is up-to-date on core vaccinations and tested negative for heartworms in Aug. 2025. He is on monthly prevention.

Tor does well in the house, not chewing things up or making a mess. He is very interested in any animal he hasn't met and has a forward greeting style which can be intimidating.

Tor is loose in the bedroom at night and when his foster mom goes to work. He is comfy in a 48 inch crate if needed, but prefers a 54 inch crate. He never makes a mess or chews on his crate pad.

Tor showed affection and house manners to the family that had to surrender him. They have small children and, aside from accidentally knocking them down due to his size and their poor balance, he was a good family dog. Tor isn't a face-kisser, except sometimes when riding in a car. When he gets excited, he'll dance in place with his front paws :)

Tor pulls strongly on the leash when not given sufficient exercise but is more amenable when allowed to run in the yard a few minutes to burn off energy before his walk. His foster had hip replacement in Nov. 2024 and had to use a walker or cane. During her rehab period, at home, Tor didn't pull at all but was very gentle to accommodate her limitations. He loves to run and would condition well to be a runner's companion or taking long hikes - even over rough terrain.

Tor does well with dogs, but shows excitement when he meets them initially. His play style is running with the other dogs. Due to his enthusiastic greeting style, he is supervised when meeting any new dog so they aren't startled. He doesn't act aggressively, so once he meets them - appropriately supervised - he does well and tends to ignore them. He tolerates being bossed around by the foster's 10 lb chihuahua. Tor isn't particularly interested in other dogs but is very curious.

Tor has acclimated to certain of the foster's cats, particularly the dog-savvy ones who stay off the floor and don't run. He rushes them at first and wants to investigate - mouth and paws - so his foster initially muzzled him and kept him on a leash during the introduction stage. He isn't allowed loose with them unsupervised, to make sure all interactions are harmonious. He would do well in a house with no cats.

Although he looks like a shepherd / lab mix, Tor's mom looked like a border collie and dad looked like a Carolina Dog. Tor is eager to please and easy to train - although he'd like to make the rules - for an experienced and consistent owner. He isn't a dog for a beginning owner. He is standoffish with strangers and doesn't want them in his personal space, but tolerates their presence outside his bubble. He loves to load in the car for adventures and explores. A favorite activity is to drive by the fast-food restaurants, as it usually means a French fry or sandwich tidbit. He takes treats very gently.

**************************************************
IF YOU ARE USING PET FINDER:
Please go to our website, foothillscaninerescue.org
Choose Adopt/Adopt a Dog and find the dog you are interested in
Click "Apply for Adoption" button to fill out an application

ALL ADOPTERS:
When adopting an intact dog, a refundable spay/neuter deposit is required, and a vet reference may be required.
