Tommy's Story

TOMMY
Cao Fila do San Miguel
Male, 9.5 yrs, 90 lbs

“Tommy is a bottomless well of love and affection. One of the most affectionate dogs we've ever met, he arrived having been surrendered by his family of nine years, owing to medical issues with his owner. It was doubtless a terrible shock to leave his family, but he has settled in beautifully, and treats everyone like the kindly old gent he is.. It’s been wonderful to see his health return, the newfound spring in his step, bright eyes and shiny coat. He has a naturally confident, outgoing disposition and he’s bewitched so many passersby in our neighborhood.

Tommy’s breed, Cao Fila do San Miguel was bred as a cattle herding dog., and as a puppy his ears were cropped and tail docked to conform to that job description. Filas are known for their calm disposition, heavy muscular builds, determination (okay, stubbornness) and high intelligence. He is all these things and more.

His life became very sedentary over the past several years, so as fosters we wanted first to restore his health flexibility and energy. Now he has gotten over the shock of the new fitness plan you can tell he loves to move. As he has worked away the stiffness in his joints from enforced inactivity, you can see that he would absolutely love to be your companion on long walks, preferably through fields and woods. He’s not a sprinter, but can lope through the fields for hours at a time, but he’s too interested in your location to be a flight risk.

Tommy arrived here with a couple of bad habits, like in walking and counter surfing! He was very overweight, like by 15 lbs! That translated to wheeziness and difficulty walking more than a block or two. We started with multiple short walks daily, trying to stay on grass to give his joints time to acclimate. He is now used to taking three walks a day whenever possible, and has started to canter when he’s off leash. Its nice to see now an impression of ribs, and he now has a taper at his waist. (He also snores less!). We use a gentle leader, instead of his collar, and he maintains a slack leash for 80 percent of the time. A soft pull on the leash, and saying his name brings him back into your orbit pretty much instantly. He has probably dropped three or more kilos in the last. four weeks, and his mobility and breathing are much better He is also completely calm when he meets other dogs on the street. He is not much of a barker either.

He would be happiest as the lone dog in the house. He’s managed fairly well with our larger alpha male, but he is jealous of attention. He wants you all to himself. He needs an experienced dog owner who can be firm about rules. He has the working dogs need to be exactly what you want him to be, and that needs to be made very clear. With that said he is also a cuddly old couch potato who is also very pleased to curl up somewhere near you and chill. We have one couch that dogs are allowed on and he is clearly in heaven when he's sharing it with his people.

He is great in the car, and he is very keen on watching out the window. He sheds remarkably little. He will make a great family pet.

ADOPTION FEE: $300.

If you are interested in adopting this cutie, instead of emailing PARS, please download the Application Form at: www.peelanimalrescuesociety.com/adopt-a-dog
Fill the form and email to: info@peelanimalrescuesociety.com
