Toby's Story

**NOTE** TOBY IS SPECIAL NEEDS BOTH BEHAVIORALLY AND MEDICALLY. PLEASE READ HIS ENTIRE PROFILE CAREFULLY PRIOR TO CONTACTING THE RESCUE FOR CONSIDERATION.

HE CANNOT BE WALKED ON A LEASH AT ALL AND MUST HAVE A PHYSICALLY FENCED YARD.

Hello everyone, my official name is Toby-Wan Kenobi, but everyone calls me Toby dog. I’m not exactly sure what breeds I am or how old I am (best guess is terrier mix, 8-10 years old) because nobody really cared about me or took care of me when I was younger. You see, I lived in what my foster mom calls a “horrible hoarding situation” where I was forced to live in a crate 24/7! That all changed on August 1, 2020 (a day I will cherish forever) because that was the day that I (and over 20 other dogs) got our freedom ride.

When I got to my foster home my mom took me to a wonderful lady who shaved off all my filthy, nasty, disgusting fur which was matted and covered in stuff you don’t even want to think about! I felt (and smelled) so much better once I was groomed. Now I visit the nice groomer lady for a haircut and bath regularly, so I’m always clean and dapper.

Well, that was the easy stuff to fix about me. You see, because I was so isolated when young, I never developed appropriate behaviors towards dogs or humans. So, I guess you could say I have some mental health issues (don’t we all). My foster mom works with a special vet who has prescribed 3 different medications to help me cope with the world. Unfortunately, we now think that I am also diabetic, so I take a daily medication for that too, but I do well with taking all my meds.

MY BIGGEST ISSUE IS I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE LETTING ANYONE TOUCH ME. Whenever someone tries to pet me, I always move away. I don’t really know why, but I just can’t let myself be touched by anyone unless I take some special medications that really chill me out (for trips to the vet or groomers). Sometimes I can touch you if I want to, but you reaching out to me is a no-no. If you do accidentally touch me, I just sort of jump back and then move away, So I CANNOT EVER BE TAKEN OUT ON A LEASH!

Since living with my foster family (2 adults, 2 cats, and lots of dogs) I have learned to tolerate other dogs and will lay near them, but I really don’t interact much with them. I enjoy roaming around the yard and I LOVE to chew on bones, antlers, and other appropriate dog stuff, but I don’t really do toys. I guess you would say I’m a pretty quiet, laid-back dude, but I always perk up for treats or food of any kind!

If you are serious about getting to know me better to possibly adopt me, please know IT WILL BE A STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS to allow me time to get to know and trust you. My foster parents love me, and they promised me that I would NEVER AGAIN be failed so badly by humans.

Due to Toby's behaviors, he will not attend Petsmart adoption events. The Foster Mom is willing to meet outside of the Saturday adoption events at a time and place convenient to both parties once an application has been processed.

This dog is house broken, crate trained, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed, heart worm negative, on flea and heart worm preventative, and micro-chipped. This dog will REQUIRE A PHYSICALLY FENCED YARD. No apartments or condos for this dog please.

Our adoption fee is $200.00 (cash or credit card)

HOW TO APPLY: If you would like to apply for this dog or any of our other dogs, please request an application by clicking the “START YOUR INQUIRY” button.

You can also go directly to our website at www.waganimalrescue.com to fill out an application.

You must be at least 25 years old to apply.

IMPORTANT: An application must be filled out and approved before we will make special arrangements to meet a dog. A volunteer will review your application and contact you if your application is approved or if further clarification is required. We will make every attempt to contact APPROVED applicants within 5 business days of application submission (M-F), but this will depend on the number of applications received. If you do not answer all questions then your application may not be processed. WAG Animal Rescue adopts to homes that are best fits for our animals' needs, and not on a first-come, first-served basis. We are an all-volunteer organization, and regret that we do not have the resources to contact applicants that are not approved. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

WE DO NOT HAVE A SHELTER. All of our animals are kept in foster homes.

For more information about WAG Animal Rescue, adopting an animal please visit our home page www.waganimalrescue.com. WAG Animal Rescue's Adoption Policy
Adoption fees provide some recuperation of costs associated with providing in-home and necessary veterinary care while the animal is in our program. The benefit of adopting from an organization that provides in-home foster care is that the animal’s behavior has been evaluated by their care providers in a natural living environment, rather than oftentimes unpleasant surroundings of a shelter. WAG foster care providers care for the animals as if they are their own, and learn to know the animal’s likes and dislikes, ability to co-exist with other animals, ability to tolerate children, and so forth. A volunteer will review your application and contact you ONLY if you are approved or if further clarification is required. We will make every attempt to contact approved applicants within 5 business days of application submission (M-F), but this will depend on the number of applications received. Please be patient while we processes your adoption applications. We want to be sure that the best match possible is made, so that the dog does not end up needing re-homing again. Please understand that by answering the questions does not guarantee the adoption of the pet, nor are you obligated to adopt the pet. WAG Animal Rescue adopts to homes that are best fits for our animals' needs, and not on a first-come, first-served basis. If you currently own a pet or have a history of pet ownership, you must provide a vet reference for your application to be processed. Preference is given to applications with prior animal experience and vet references. We are an all-volunteer organization, and regret that we do not have the resources to contact applicants that are not approved. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Approved applicants are based on best fit, not first submitted. WAG RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE ANY APPLICANT, so please understand that it is within our discretion to make those decisions on behalf of our animals. Keep in mind that we depend 100% on volunteers, most of whom have full-time jobs, so we ask for your understanding as we do the best we can in the endless effort to find homes for these deserving animals! WE DO NOT HAVE A SHELTER, ALL OF OUR ANIMALS ARE IN ONE OF OUR VOLUNTEERS HOME. HOW TO MEET: Many WAG's animals are available for viewing and adoption every Saturday from 11 am-3 pm at the Livonia PetSmart, located at Middlebelt and I-96. OUR ADOPTION EVENTS ARE VERY BUSY so please keep that in mind if you intend to come. You should expect to spend some time there if you are sincerely interested in one of our animals (since we have limited manpower and many visitors to screen). WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT THE ANIMAL YOU ARE INTERESTED IN WILL BE AT THE ADOPTION EVENT. We ask that you DO NOT contact PetSmart about our animals. They are kind enough to provide space for our adoption events, but are not involved with our rescue work. Please email us if there is a specific animal you would like to meet to be sure they will be at the adoption event. Please remember.......our first and ONLY consideration is the safety and happiness of our animals.
