Toby's Story

Hi, my name is Toby! I'm a big 112-pound German Shepherd mix with an even bigger heart that's just waiting for the right person to help it shine.

Right now, the shelter makes me pretty anxious-I tend to pace, pant, and stay on edge because it's all a little overwhelming for me. Even so, I know my name and will come when you call, and once I start to warm up, I'll surprise you with how sweet I can be.

When you pet me, I'll lean into you and even rub against you like a cat, even if I try to act like I don't care. The truth is, I really do love the attention-I just get nervous and stubborn sometimes, so I need someone patient who will let me take things at my own pace.

The most important thing to know about me is that I'm bonded to my best friend, Buster. He's my rock, and I always keep my eyes on him, following him everywhere we go. When we're separated, I get anxious and just want to get back to him, so we'll need to find a forever home together. I may look independent and act like I'm too cool for cuddles, but really, that's just because I'm scared in this environment.

Deep down, I'm a very sweet boy who's ready to build a bond with a family that understands me. With time, patience, and the comfort of a safe home alongside Buster, I know my true personality will come out-and I'll show you just how loving and loyal I can be.

Humane Society of The Black Hills's Adoption Policy
The adoption process may take up to one hour to complete but we’ll keep it as simple and streamlined as possible. Here are the steps when you’re considering adopting a pet: - Visit our website to see available animals or see them on-site during regular hours, seven days a week. - When you find a dog, cat or small animal you would like to spend more time with, simply call the Humane Society of the Black Hills at (605) 394-4170 for an appointment. - Occasionally, our team is able to accommodate walk-ins, but as we cannot guarantee them, it is best to call for an appointment. -During your scheduled appointment, an adoption advisor will review the animal's history with you and bring the animal to meet you for an initial visit. - A second appointment may be made for you for a variety of reasons (Ex. You have a dog at home you'd like to bring in to meet the pet next). -Once you have met a pet that you think is your perfect match and you have been approved to adopt, your adoption advisor will take you through the adoption process, and you can take your new family member home!
