Toby's Story

The biographical information provided is correct to the best of our knowledge while the animal is in our care or includes what may have been provided by a previous owner. We strive to be honest and accurate, but animals can change their personalities and behavior when they settle into a new home. IDR+ makes no guarantees based on the information we observe and provide.

Toby is a young (estimated 2 years old) Pomeranian mix with a big personality and an even bigger zest for life. From day one in his foster home, he acted like he’d always belonged—confident, curious, smart, and delightfully sassy in all the best ways.

Toby is energetic and thrives when he’s kept busy. He loves walks, toys, chew toys, and anything that gives him a job to do. He’s food-motivated, very trainable, and already knows some manners—he’s house trained with regular outdoor breaks and happily sits for treats and meals (sometimes popping up on his hind legs because he’s so excited!).

One thing to know about Toby: he takes his role as President of the Neighborhood Watch very seriously. He tends to bark at new people, dogs, and everyday sights and sounds—especially at first. The good news? He does settle when redirected and asked to sit for a treat, and he continues to improve with consistent handling. Slow, structured introductions are key for Toby, whether it’s with new people or other dogs. Once he warms up, his affectionate and loyal side really shines.

Toby has done well with other dogs after initial introductions (including a beagle and a small chihuahua mix) and could live with a friendly dog who understands boundaries. Older, dog-savvy kids would be best for him. Cats are unknown at this time.

He is excellent in his crate, settles well at night, and listens closely to his foster. Because of his vocal nature, apartment living is not the best fit for Toby.

Toby is deeply bonded with his foster, loves attention, and is happiest when he’s engaged and understood. He’s looking for a patient, experienced home that will appreciate his intelligence, guide him through his big feelings, and help him continue to grow into the amazing companion he’s meant to be.

If you’re looking for a smart, active, opinionated little dog with tons of personality and love to give, Toby may be your guy.

Illinois Doberman Rescue Plus's Adoption Policy
The first step in meeting our adoptable animals is the breed/species-specific application at www.ILDobeRescue.com. We do a vet check, landlord/association verification, and home visit to ensure a permanent placement for our wonderful animals. Thank you for considering rescue! We look forward to working with you. IDR+ is a network of foster homes; therefore, we do not have a location to visit. The first step in meeting our adoptable animals is the specific application at www.ILDobeRescue.com for a Doberman, Plus dog (non-Dobe), or cat. Approved adopters are then directed to our foster homes.
