Meet Temperance 5yr Cocker Spaniel female

Temperance is a 5 yrs young, 20lb female Cocker Spaniel who was surrendered by a commercial breeder as a retired breeding mom.

Tempi is a happy, darling girl who is blossoming in her foster home.

She adores her people and will require someone home more often where she can be loved as the queen she is.

Tempi is seeking a home without other pets.
She’s shy with other dogs and not interested in interacting. When out on a walk, she will walk past other dogs with no reaction but if another dog tries to say hello or sniff her, she will either keep her distance or want to head in the opposite direction. She would thrive best in a home without other pets/as a cherished only dog for her own comfort level.
She is not reactive to other dogs on walks but doesn't appreciate dogs in her face and will be happiest as a single pet.

We did not receive any history with her, so exact age is unknown. She is approx. 5yrs.

Notes from Tempi's foster mom:

As soon as we get up, we take Tempi outside and she does her business right away. She is at her most energetic first thing in the morning and scampers around excitedly until she gets her breakfast.

On weekdays, Tempi has a 30-minute sniffy walk at about 8:30, and then a longer (45 minutes to 1 hour) walk in the early evening. On weekends, she has three walks a day.
We go out in the backyard every 2-3 hours for a potty break and sniff around.

We are working on her training for a few minutes at a time to help her with learning new skills. When not exploring the backyard or following us about the house, she likes to spend her time chilling and napping on her dog bed.
She likes to sleep at my feet when I’m working from home.
We always have one last potty trip before bed and she sleeps all night on her dog bed.

IS YOUR FOSTER DOG FOOD MOTIVATED? Yes, very. Tempi gets super excited at mealtimes and loves treats.
HOW DOES YOUR FOSTER DOG RESPOND TO MEETING NEW PEOPLE
Great. She’s comfortable with visitors and is interested in meeting new people both at home and on walks. She’s still a little shy but she enjoys company and attention. She was very happy with all the visitors we had over the holidays, choosing to hang out in the same room as us and approaching new people with curiosity.
GOOD WITH CATS? Unknown but would likely be fine with calm, dog savvy, respectful cats

ANY GUARDING BEHAVIOURS NOTED None at all.
HOUSETRAINED? Yes
CRATE TRAINED? Tempi's not a huge fan of the crate but will travel in it in the car with minimal fuss. She was unhappy even being an area closed off which is common in these poor dogs who spent years in a breeding pen.
As she loves her dog bed (she naps there during the day and doesn't move from there all night) and is not at all destructive, she does not require crating in the home.
Tempi is not usually left alone during the day as there tends to be someone in the house at any given time. But she has been left her alone with her foster sister a few times, for at most 3 hours, and she’s been fine. She just goes to sleep on her bed.

LEASH SKILLS.
Excellent! Tempi is a dream to walk. She is great at loose leash walking, does not pull, and is easily redirected. She loves a good sniff but we do have to watch her closely though to make sure she doesn't eat random stuff off the ground!

Tempi is fine with having her ears, tail, paws etc. touched. She lets us groom her and tolerates her ear cleaning with no complaints.

PERSONALITY/TEMPERAMENT Sweet, friendly, curious, calm, easy-going, intelligent, gentle, quiet, shy.
She's growing in confidence all the time and loves company. She gets very excited when one of us comes home after being out. She likes to gently chew and snuffle select toys but hasn't shown any interest in playing in general.
She never barks and is fine when people come to the door or when she hears other dogs barking.

She makes the most adorable, excited squeaky noise and scampers about when we all get up in the morning or when it's food time. She also has a funny habit of doing delicate little sneezes when she gets excited!

MEDICAL: Temperance arrived with a yeast infection in both her ears, which has now cleared up but her ears still need to be cleaned regularly. She will need to stay on her current balanced raw diet to avoid carbohydrates.

Tempi has had a full dental with extractions, spay/mammary growth removal, which we are happy to report was all benign.

FOOD AMOUNT/TYPE: Tempi loves her raw food and always cleans her bowl. Due to Tempi requiring significant extractions after her dental surgery, she will need to remain on either her balanced raw diet patties or an approved high quality, high meat/grain free wet food as she cannot eat dry food.

FEEDING ROUTINES: Twice a day, morning and evening. Tempi is also temporarily having an additional smaller meal at lunch as she is still working on gaining weight.

POTTY HABITS:
Tempi is fully house-trained and accidents are rare. We do keep her to a regular potty break schedule to be on the safe side but she also lets us know when she needs to go potty by sitting at the back door or by coming to find us if we’re in another part of the house. If we see her sniffing around a lot inside, we take her out right away.

CURRENT ROUTINES
A morning and early evening walk, allowing lots of time for sniffing and exploring; breakfast and dinner at regular times; being respectful of her space (e.g. allowing her to come to you first).
Giving her attention and love when she seeks it. Tempi is a low-key dog who is happy to chill-out on her bed but she loves a good walk and scamper around the yard so ensuring she has a balance of activity and downtime will be important.

Tempi has gone from being very shy and anxious to actively seeking out our company and following us around the whole house. She was scared of the stairs when she first arrived but now runs up and down with no problem. She adores receiving love and attention. She knows her name and will come when called.

Tempi loves walks and happily trots to the door when we're getting ready to go out. She especially enjoys exploring the woods near our house on her leashed sniffy walks. She likes a mix of taking hertime to sniff and explore and trotting along at a good pace.
Shy behaviour may return during her transition into her forever home and her new family will need to be patient, kind, and allow her to blossom at her own pace with positive reinforcement

She likes human company and she needs lots of love, kindness and patience as she continues to learn. She's still learning to trust humans but she will continue to blossom with lots of gentle attention and care. She needs a family who will continue to work on her socialization and training, and who will understand when she wants attention and when to respect her independence.

Tempi really is a wonderful, easy dog and a perfect companion. She’s gentle and smart, and everyone who meets her comments on how cute and adorable she is. As her confidence grows, we’re seeing a little playfulness emerge and this side to her personality will only continue to grow with love and attention.

Tempi is the most easy-going, adorable sweetheart. She's gentle, smart, and an all-round great dog.

Notes:
*Children must be over 10yrs, respectful and dog savvy with previous experience with dogs in the home. Tempi is shy and would not do well in a busy household with loud children/teenagers
*Must be located within Ontario Canada
*Inground/ground level Pools and deeper ponds must be separately fenced from yard
Tempi's new family will be required to attend training classes with an approved positive method trainer
