One and a half of those brain cells are dedicated entirely to keeping track of his humans so he can be as close to them as physically possible.

This sweet, sensitive house hippo is built like a rugby player but has the athleticism of a walrus on land. He is equal parts stubborn, ridiculous, and completely irresistible.

Tater doesn’t just love his people. He wants to become one with them. He firmly believes he belongs on your couch, in your bed, on your lap, or wedged between your ear and your neck. Personal space is simply not a concept he understands.

Despite his questionable problem-solving abilities, Tater has plenty going for him! He’s fully housetrained, walks beautifully on leash, and is very food motivated. He knows how to sit, although most other commands are still taken under advisement. He’s also learned to grab one of his beloved stuffies when he gets excited, rather than stealing someone’s shoes. Small victories!

He’s a wonderful character who snores like a freight train and will sing you the saddest little song in the tiniest voice if he thinks there’s a chance you’ll share your dinner.

Tater is also great around other dogs! He's non-reactive, reads their social cues well, and enjoys their company. When it's time to play, he's your typical bully: lots of wrestling, body slamming, and enthusiastic roughhousing. While he loves a good playdate with his dog friends, Tater would be happiest as the only dog in his home, where he can soak up all the love and attention for himself. He has not been tested with cats.

Tater can sometimes get overstimulated, test boundaries, and occasionally forget that he’s a 60-pound tank. His foster has been working on helping him settle, redirect his excitement, and make better choices, and he’s making lovely progress. He has no issues with resource guarding and is happy to share his toys.

One thing Tater does struggle with is being away from his people. He has separation anxiety, but he’s slowly learning that being alone doesn’t mean being abandoned. He’s now managing short periods alone without medication and longer stretches with medication. His future family will need to continue working with him patiently.

Because of his size, physical enthusiasm, and occasional stubbornness, Tater would do best in a home without young children and with someone experienced with bully breeds. He needs people who can provide structure, consistency, and plenty of affection.

Tater may never win an agility competition. He figured out his treat ball surprisingly quickly but still hasn’t quite worked out what to do with a Kong. Intelligence might not be his greatest strength, but loving people certainly is.

And that’s really what makes Tater so special. Underneath that big, blocky head and ridiculous personality is an incredibly gentle, sensitive boy who just wants to love and be loved.

Tater doesn’t need much to be happy. Just his people, a few good stuffies, and someone who won’t mind sharing every inch of personal space with a 60-pound hippo.

For an adoption application:
https://straightouttarescuesociety.ca/dog-adoption-application
