Tanni's Story

Dog Name: Tanni

Breed: Mix

Sex: female

Age: approximately 8 years

Weight: 85 pounds

Medical Needs: Tanni completed heartworm treatment and has now tested negative for heartworm. She is prescribed trazodone for anxiety during thunder storms as needed.

Housebroken: Yes

Crate trained: Yes, it's not her favorite place and will try to dodge you when she knows it's time to go in (unless you have a dental chew) but she's usually fine once she's in.

Good in the car: yes, absolutely loves car rides. She needs to be tethered in the back or she'll try to ride up front with you.

Good on a leash: She is good for the most part but when she pulls, she is STRONG. A prong collar helps and she has become more tuned in to me, responds to pressure on her prong collar, will do check ins for treats voluntarily and when asked, which helps with her pulling when she sees another dog. She absolutely loves walks and will always go the door, trying to get you to take her out. She does great on hikes and then walking in new areas.

Energy level: She spends a lot of time napping but will try to follow you out of the house whenever you go somewhere and is always down for a walk or adventure. She gets short lived zoomies and has to grab a toy and run around with it when she gets let out of her crate.

Need a fenced in yard: No, she likes it I sun bathe on the deck when it's nice out but doesn't care to spend too much time in the yard otherwise. She prefers the couch asa place to hang out.

Dog Friendly: dog selective, she is weird with new dogs at first but will adjust after a slow and structured introduction. This has improved. She does very well with the two other dogs in her foster home. She has had some resource guarding in the past. This has improved, but would still require some management, especially at first, in her new family. She would not do well with any overly assertive, in your face dogs, who would not be able to read her cues.

If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? No, she would be happy to be the center of attention

Cat Friendly? The cats would answer no, I think she would answer yes. She will chase them but doesn't seem to mean any harm. However, they do not appreciate an 80 pound dog hurtling at them out of nowhere. Two of the cats have a serious beef with her and hiss and swat at her whenever she tries to comes upstairs. She is now scared of them. But will still chase when their guard is down.

Kid Friendly: Kids seem to stress her out

If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? 10 and up

Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them?

Tanni is a very sweet and soulful girl. She lived with a family until her owner passed away and she ended up at a "rescue" in Georgia. Tanni has been with her foster family for about a year. While she has always been a good girl, she has made progress in a lot of areas such as her interactions with other dogs, resource guarding, kitchen manners, and behavior at the vet.

Tanni gets adorable bursts of energy, especially when first let out of her crate, and likes to play fetch with her toys. But mostly she enjoys cuddling with people on the couch and demanding pets. She also has her favorite arm chair where she curls up on her own for hours at a time once she's gotten her fill of affection. She loves head scratches, butt scratches, and belly rubs. She will follow you around the house and keep you company. She has been very loved by every foster family who has cared for her. She is not destructive at all, but make sure you don't leave any food on the counter in her reach. She will also try to find a way to get to the cat food (and cat litter). Tanni loves to go for walks and car rides, so she's happy to hang out with you at home or go on and adventure. She has been to different houses, gone camping, gone to coffee shops, hikes, and even the American Dream mall, and is generally a very good girl wherever she goes.

Fosters Location: Newark, DE

Application can be found here: https://www.grrde.org/adoption-application (if you already have an approved application on file email GrassRootsDE@gmail.com and ask the app team to pull your app
