Tanni's Story

Dog Name: Tanni

Breed: Dogue de Bordeaux and hound mix (we did a DNA test)

Sex: female

Age: approximately 8 years

Weight: 85 pounds

Medical Needs: Tanni completed heartworm treatment and has now tested negative for heartworm. She is prescribed trazodone for anxiety during thunder storms as needed.

Housebroken: Yes

Crate trained: Yes, it's not her favorite place and will try to dodge you when she knows it's time to go in (unless you have a dental chew). She is usually okay once she's on but may bark if it's not the normal downtime in her schedule, and her bark is LOUD.

Good in the car: yes, absolutely loves car rides. She needs to be tethered in the back or she'll try to ride up front with you.

Good on a leash: she has made a great deal of progress but may still pull when she sees another dog or cat, and she is STRONG. She will get on their scent and pull. She has gotten much better at doing checks in for treats. When you're not around any other animals, she's great. A prong collar goes a long way, she is not fun to walk without one. She absolutely loves walks and will always go the door, trying to get you to take her out. She does great on hikes and when walking in new areas.

Energy level: She enjoys her routine. She wakes up around 6am and then demands her morning walk. If the weather is not suitable for a walk, we do different enrichment activities. She's usually asleep on the couch from 8am until about 4pm. Then she's up for a walk, a little play time, and dinner. Then she's ready to cuddle up with you on the couch for the rest of the evening.

Need a fenced in yard: No, she likes to sun bathe on the deck when it's nice out but doesn't care to spend too much time outside otherwise. She prefers the couch.

Dog Friendly: dog selective, she is weird with new dogs at first but will usually adjust after a slow and structured introduction. This has improved. She does well with the two other dogs in her foster home. She has some resource guarding that has led to some scuffles, none with any serious injuries. This has improved, but would still require management, especially at first, in her new family. She would not do well with any overly assertive, in your face dogs, who would not be able to read her cues.

If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive homes? No, she would be happy to be the center of attention

Cat Friendly? She tries to charge the cats sometimes and because of this, they hate her. She has not caused them any harm and they usually end up with her backed into a wall and cowering in any fights. When she's asleep on the couch, the cats will tentatively approach and curl up next to her.

Caring for Tanni as an only pet would certainly be easier, but she lives with two other dogs and three cats in relative peace.

Kid Friendly: Kids seem to stress her out. She is also very strong and can be mouthy at times (easily directed usually)

If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? 10 and up and mature enough to respect her boundaries and not leave any dangerous food items in her reach.

Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them?

Tanni is a very sweet and soulful girl who is very loyal to her people. She lived with a family until her owner passed away and she ended up at a "rescue" in Georgia. Tanni has been with her foster family for over a year. While she has always been a good girl, she has made progress in a lot of areas such as her interactions with other dogs, resource guarding, kitchen manners, and behavior at the vet. She can get growly and mouthy (usually not forcefully) when being handled such as when wiping her feet or putting on a harness or jacket or being pet in a certain way. She doesn't mean any harm and is just trying to communicate, but as a very large and loud dog, her reactions can be scary to some people.

Tanni gets adorable bursts of energy, especially when first let out of her crate, and likes to play fetch with her toys. But mostly she enjoys cuddling with people on the couch and demanding pets. She loves head scratches, butt scratches, and belly rubs. She will hang out with you in the kitchen waiting for some snacks. She loves bananas, cucumber, kale, and frozen broccoli is her favorite. She has been very loved by every foster family who has cared for her. She is not destructive at all, but make sure you don't leave any food on the counter in her reach. Tanni loves to go for walks and car rides, so she's happy to hang out with you at home or go on and adventure. She has been to visit different houses, gone camping, gone to coffee shops, hikes, and even the American Dream mall, and is generally a good girl when out and about.

Fosters Location: Newark, DE

Application can be found here: https://www.grrde.org/adoption-application (if you already have an approved application on file email GrassRootsDE@gmail.com and ask the app team to pull your app
