He has been one of the easiest dogs I have welcomed into my home, and it is very evident that he has lived in a home setting before.

Tadpole has excellent house manners. He knows to stay out of the kitchen, and if I tell him to get out of the kitchen, he happily walks out. He also understands that begging is not allowed. If he does try his luck and I tell him to go lay down, he does — usually while giving me the saddest look imaginable.

He is a very playful guy, but he definitely has preferences! Tadpole much prefers Nyla bones, rope toys, and anything tennis-ball related over stuffed toys. He has learned the "drop" command and understands phrases like "bring it over here" and "go get your baby." He loves playing tug and is not overly intense about it. We have been working on controlled tug games, which have been a great way to tire him out while also continuing to build his impulse control.

Tadpole is also very good at occupying himself with his toys and does so frequently, but he absolutely loves when I join in. Tossing tennis balls or playing with his rope toy together is one of his favorite things.

Tadpole and Kids
Tadpole recently met a very energetic three-year-old. He did okay, although I noticed some signs of fear initially — ears back and wide eyes. He adjusted fairly quickly and frequently sought me out for reassurance.

Because Tadpole can be a sensitive guy, I think he would likely thrive best in a home with older, more respectful children who understand how to give a dog space and read his body language.

Tadpole and Cats
Tadpole has been doing really well with my cats overall. My cats absolutely love dogs and can be very annoying, and Tadpole frequently engages with them appropriately — nose-butting them, doing play bows, and trying to initiate play.

Since my last update, there has only been one additional instance of Tadpole growling at the cats. This seems to happen specifically when he is deeply asleep and a cat comes near him. If I tell him "no, leave it," he stops vocalizing, although he remains wide-eyed and clearly uncomfortable.

I have continued to manage this appropriately by giving him space and feeding him separately from the cats as a precaution against any potential resource guarding. He shares water with them well, and when I feed the cats, Tadpole knows to wait by the door until I am finished before he gets his own food.

I think Tadpole simply has big feelings and is a sensitive communicator. He has never growled at me, but there have been a couple of instances where he has offered his paw and then growled when it was touched. While this may sound scary to someone unfamiliar with him, I have found that once you understand Tadpole's communication style, his signals are actually fairly easy to read and manage. He seems to be very clear about when something makes him uncomfortable, and he responds well when that boundary is respected.

Tadpole Is Still a Bit of a Chicken Butt
Tadpole is definitely still working through some fears. Sudden noises can startle him, and he has been known to be suspicious of small cardboard signs. Yesterday, he saw an umbrella opened and sitting on the ground. He cautiously walked over for a brief sniff and then immediately backed away from it.

We have been working on building positive associations with things he finds scary by pairing them with high-value treats. He is making progress, but he is still a sensitive guy and will need someone willing to continue building his confidence.

Food
Tadpole is a bit of a picky eater. Currently, he likes his dry food with Essential Vitals Freeze-Dried Beef Entrée Mini Nibs as a topper.

Crate & Alone Time
Tadpole is now willing to go into his crate. He will be a bit of a crybaby after a few minutes, but if I tell him to lay down, he will settle.

Because he is not destructive, I don't currently crate him for long periods. I live in an apartment and don't want him crying for an extended period of time when I don't need to confine him.

Yesterday, I had to leave him alone for a few hours. He initially cried and stood by the door. I was able to tell him through my camera to go lay down, and although he briefly paced, he stopped crying and settled.

Car Rides & Adventures
Tadpole LOVES, LOVES, LOVES car rides. He is always pulling toward my car when we're out on walks because he knows that means an adventure!

We have gone to Sebald Metro Park a few times, and he has an absolute blast. He even gets into the creeks — although mostly because he wants to drink the water!

The Cuddliest Boy
Tadpole is an incredibly cuddly dog. If there is a part of you available, he wants his head on it. Your back? Perfect. Your arm? Even better. Your foot? Obviously acceptable.

He will also stand over you when he wants something, such as going outside or getting some water. It is his very polite-but-not-at-all-subtle way of saying, "Excuse me, I have a request."

Tadpole at Work
One of Tadpole's absolute favorite places is work. He gets ecstatic when he realizes we are going to work. He starts pacing around the back seat, crying with excitement, and pulls to get inside because he desperately wants to greet everyone he passes.

He absolutely ADORES being at work and meeting people.

Overall, Tadpole continues to be such a wonderful foster. He is affectionate, playful, smart, and eager to engage with his person. He has great house manners and has learned so much in the few weeks he has been here.

He is also a sensitive dog who can have some very BIG FEELINGS. He can be cautious about new or unexpected things, and he communicates his discomfort in ways that some people may initially find intimidating. However, he is remarkably easy to redirect, and once you learn his body language and respect what he is communicating, he is a very manageable and rewarding dog.

Tadpole would do best with someone who will continue helping him build confidence, give him appropriate boundaries and space, and appreciate all of his goofy, cuddly, sensitive little quirks. He has so much love to give, and watching him become more comfortable and confident has been incredibly rewarding.

***TO INQUIRE: IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR WANT TO MEET THIS ANIMAL, please come to the shelter during our operating hours OR email AnimalServices@bcohio.gov.

Tadpole is current on shots, licensed, and microchipped.
