Susie's Story

Meet Susie
~4 years old | 38 lbs | Brindle | Sweet, Gentle Mama

Susie’s rescue story began with an urgent call for help. When our Tennessee partner was contacted about puppies being given away, the response about their mom was heartbreaking: Susie was going to be euthanized because her family was moving and didn’t want to take her with them. Thankfully, Susie was surrendered instead, arriving at the shelter with her five babies and weighing just 26 pounds, completely depleted from caring for them.

Despite being underweight and battling worms, Susie was a wonderful, devoted mama, giving everything she had to raise happy, healthy puppies. With proper care and love, she is now a healthy 38 pounds and continuing to blossom.

Susie is incredibly sweet, gentle, and loving with everyone, and once she knows she’s safe, she relaxes completely. She is quiet in her crate and has not barked, growled, or made a peep in foster care! She does show signs of past trauma and may flinch at loud noises or sudden movements, so a calm, patient home would be best for her. Do you have other dogs? Older kids? She is friendly with all! She may, however, be a bit too interested in cats.

Susie has the most beautiful smile, and recently she’s begun to show her playful side - getting excited over toys and balls, chasing them in the yard, and wagging her tail hard when something makes her happy. Watching her discover joy has been incredibly rewarding.

She is still learning house manners and does best with a fenced yard as she’s still timid on the leash. She understands going potty outside once she’s there, but she doesn’t yet know how to ask to go out. The good news? Susie is very food and treat motivated and is making steady progress with routine and patience.

Susie is a beautiful, loyal girl with a gentle heart who has spent her young life caring for others. Now, she deserves an amazing home of her own. Will you be her second chance at happiness?
