Sully's Story

Meet Sully – a beautiful, sweet, and sensitive boy who’s searching for his very special forever home! At just 3 years old, Sully is a husky mix who came to us in August 2025 from a Northern community. Before joining us, he spent 7 months in a shelter that didn’t have an adoption program. During that time, he gained quite a bit of weight and now has about 15 pounds to lose. Thanks to a diet change and increased exercise, Sully has already lost 5 pounds, but he still has a little ways to go.

Sully is generally good with most dogs, though he’s not fond of intact or dominant males. This is somewhat typical for dogs from Northern communities, where they often have to compete for resources and are left intact for much longer than usual. Sully himself was intact when he arrived at 3 years old. He also has a high prey drive, so it’s unlikely he would be a good fit in a home with cats. We will continue to monitor his behavior to be sure.

Sully is great with kids and has lived with children as young as 1 year old. However, due to some of the behaviors he’s displayed, we’re looking for a home with children 12 years and older, or ideally a home without children at all.
Crate trained and house trained, Sully uses his crate as his safe place, and he’s comfortable spending time in it when his foster parents are away or overnight. While he is house trained, he has marked in new environments, so he’ll need supervision as he settles into a new home to ensure this doesn’t become an issue.

Sully is currently working on his leash manners and his off-leash recall, so there’s lots of potential for fun outdoor adventures once he’s ready to move into his forever family!

Now, here's where things get a bit more complicated. Sully recently spent a few weeks in a foster home with two adults and an infant. He bonded quickly with his new family and settled in well at first. However, as he became more comfortable, he started showing some undesirable behavior tied to his insecure and submissive nature. Specifically, Sully began to guard his humans from anyone who entered the home, even those who were frequent visitors. If he felt threatened, he would reach out and nip as a form of protection.

While his foster family wanted to work through this behaviour with him, we made the decision to bring Sully back to HQ for safety, especially for the infant, as we didn’t want his guarding behaviour to negatively affect his future prospects in a family setting.

Sully is now at HQ with our founder, where he will undergo intensive training. Not only will he work on his basic manners, but he’ll also focus on building his confidence to help reduce his guarding tendencies. It’s important to note that this will be something his forever home will need to continue working on long-term. Sully will need proper introductions, supervision, and management as he transitions into a new home.

Despite the challenges he’s facing, Sully has so much potential, and we truly believe in him. The benefit of addressing these behaviors early is that by the time he’s ready for adoption, he’ll have more training than the average dog. We’re excited to see how he grows and flourishes!

If you’d like to follow along on Sully’s journey, you can check out his Instagram at @trauzzi.and.co, where his foster mom shares updates on his progress – the successes, the setbacks, and everything in between (all in the name of transparency!).
