Meet Sugar #24

Sugar #24 is a 5 year old chocolate female lab. She is a stout little sweetheart. She came from a breeder who needed to reduce the number of dogs she had due to her failing health. She would do great in a home with older kids and other dogs. She is a sweet girl looking for someone to cuddle up with. She weighs about 60 pounds and is just as sweet as her name.

June 29, 2023 Update from Sugar’s Foster Mom:

When Sugar first came into our home, she was completely terrified of everything and everyone. She cringed at the sound of the icemaker from the fridge or a kitchen draw shutting. It was difficult to watch her jump at every sound. She would not approach me and cringed when I tried to pet her. Now, 3 and ½ weeks later, Sugar has settled in now and gets along well with her foster brother and sister. She loves to chase and tumble in the yard with her larger foster brother. She is totally housebroken and can be trusted to be free in the house without a crate or even a gate. Sugar was initially crated at night but did not enjoy it nor did she need it. She is also learning that riding in the car usually results in some type of adventure and can be fun. Walking on leash was new to Sugar as well and although she has additional work to do, with the assistance of a no-pull harness she is making great progress. Sugar is still shy when she meets new people. Due to the isolation she faced while she was in the kennel, it can take a while for her to trust people. Patience and love are the key to earning that trust. Due to her shyness, we feel that the best home for Sugar would include a well socialized dog in the family so she can learn the ways of the world from that dog as well as a traditional fenced-in yard (not electric). Older children would be preferred. Sugar continues to improve and now during walks in the backyard I will feel Sugar walking beside me and nuzzling my hand with her muzzle reaching for a pet from me. What a difference the time and patience has made on her. Sugar is as sweet as her name.
