Squirt's Story

ABOUT SQUIRT!
If you're looking for a running partner and a cuddle buddy in one, come meet Squirt! Squirt is a 9-month-old, 45 pound, mixed breed pup who loves to play with his human and dog friends alike. He was found as a stray and rescued by one of our Southern shelter partners. Since arriving here, he has become a playgroup superstar, making friends with just about any dog! Squirt is not only popular among other dogs - he is also a staff and volunteer favorite! When he's not galloping around the field with his friends, tossing a stuffed animal for himself, or enjoying a frozen stuffed Kong, you can find him lounging in the grass and sunbathing. He may even flop down in the middle of a walk!
Squirt is an excited boy who is learning basic commands. He has figured out 'sit', but is still working on his leash manners. He LOVES tug of war, which can sometimes mean he sees the leash as a rope toy. However, he is doing wonderful with his training sessions and is eager to please (and to get treats)! He is not yet completely house or crate trained.
Since adjusting from his previous life as a stray, Squirt has been desperate to stay in the company of other people or dogs. He prefers being out and about rather than in his kennel; to help him with this, our volunteers began giving him field trips out of the shelter through our Doggy Day Out program! Here's what they have to say about him:

I had a great day with Squirt from Wilmington. He was a fantastic passenger in the car and just laid down the whole ride. We went to Bonsall park where he met lots of people. He was friendly to everyone and was really good on the leash. He liked to walk slow and smell everything. He didn't pull at all. He actually walked a little too slow because he wanted to take lots of breaks rolling around in the grass. He does seem a little fearful of new things. He definitely had some crazy puppy moments but he is a really good boy. I heard that he's struggling at the shelter. I can't believe he hasn't been scooped up yet. When he gets a family of his own he's going to stick to them like glue. He's a special guy.

If you are interested in adopting this dog, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific dog but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! All household members, including children and other dogs, must come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, fecal testing, heartworm testing, and a small bag of food to get you started.
