MEET SNOWDEN!<br/><br/>Look at this face! Snowden is a very sweet five-year-old, neutered male Shepherd mix who weighs 52 lbs. He was transferred to Charley’s strays from our rescue partners in Miami who saved her from an overcrowded shelter. He has such a great personality and wonderful facial expressions!<br/><br/>From our southern rescue partners:<br/>“A very well-mannered happy boy that has gotten along with everyone! <br/><br/>He came into the shelter emaciated, infected with puncture wounds on his neck and lethargic. He could hardly stand up for more than a minute. He was also terrified. He was very hungry but couldn't stand long enough to eat.”<br/><br/>We are again so thankful to our rescue partners in Florida who stepped up to save Snowden and did the hard work of nursing him back to health. As you can see from these pictures, Snowden has healed well from his injuries and is now ready for his forever home.<br/><br/>Now that he is feeling better, Snowden has a lot of energy! He will need a family that can commit to a good deal of daily walking and playtime. <br/><br/>Snowden is alert, eager, intelligent, sweet, friendly, great on dog walks, He rides well in the car,, follows directions and hand signals, is curious and intelligent. <br/><br/>>> Dogs & Cats: Snowden gets along well with dogs he meets outside of his home environment. However, as is often the case with dogs that have been previously neglected, Snowden is possessive/protective of food when other dogs and/or cats are around, That guarding behavior means that Snowden needs to be the only pet in his home, but he would enjoy having play dates with canine friends (as long as food is not involved). He likes to romp with Bubba, one of our other canine residents at the shelter.<br/><br/>>> Children: Due to lack of known history, Snowden should go to a home without children or with older children (over the age of 12).<br/><br/>Snowden is neutered and up to date on vaccines. He tested negative for Heartworm and is on monthly prevention. Please consider opening your home and heart to Snowden!<br/><br/><br/>*** IMPORTANT!***<br/><br/>IMPORTANT As a “southern” dog and due to the high rate of heartworm infection in the warmer climates, it is critical that Snowden be kept on monthly heartworm prevention ALL YEAR LONG not just in the summer months. It takes 6 months for heartworm larva to turn into adult worms that then are visible on a heartworm test. <br/><br/>Monthly prevention will kill any larva. Adoptive parents must commit to this prevention schedule as well as heartworm testing every 6 months for the first year and annually after that.<br/><br/>Heartworm prevention costs about $120 a year. Compare that to treating a dog for heartworm (a deadly disease) an expense of thousands of dollars for a treatment that is dangerous and difficult for the dog.<br/><br/>*** ADOPTION PROTOCOLS ***<br/><br/>1) Please complete and return our adoption application to charleysstrays@yahoo.com prior to arranging a meeting between your family and dog of interest.
