Smudge's Story

Smudge is a shy boy who warms up quickly and will become the sweetest shadow. He loves to follow his people around the house, settle in close for cuddles, and nap anywhere soft and cozy. He is affectionate, loyal, and has the cutest habit of curling up under blankets or resting his head on pillows like a little human.

Smudge enjoys structure and routine. He is trained and knows sit, down, and stay. He goes into his kennel when asked and sleeps quietly through the night. He also walks well on leash and loves getting out for daily walks with the other dogs in his foster home.

Smudge has done well with slow, structured introductions to other dogs. He has been living alongside large dogs in his foster home and was kenneled with a large female dog at the shelter. He does best with calm, low to medium energy dogs who give space and let him settle in at his own pace.

Inside the home, Smudge is quiet, clean, and relaxed. He can be playful with tough chew toys, but he also loves to lounge, cuddle, and enjoy the comfort of his people. Whether he is wearing his pajamas, snoozing on the couch, lounging in his kennel, or curled up under a blanket, Smudge is the perfect mix of sweet, silly, and soulful.

He will make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a loving, loyal, easygoing dog who thrives in a gentle environment.

GOOD IN A HOME WITH
Calm, respectful dogs with slow introductions
Adults or families with older children who provide a gentle, patient environment

PREFERS A HOME WITHOUT
High-energy or pushy dogs
Cats
Young children

Our primary mission is to improve the well being of animals (primarily dogs and cats) in the San Luis Valley (SLV). The San Luis Valley is the largest alpine valley in the world (roughly the size of Connecticut). It is also the poorest region of Colorado (1/3 of the residents in the county our shelter is in live below the poverty level. Our extensive spay/neuter program has reduced the number of homeless animals in this valley. And we have provided many many families with fine companion animals.
