Sister's Story

Meet Sister.

Sister has been through more in her short life than most dogs ever should. She first came into rescue last year after giving birth as a stray in Lancaster. After her puppies were taken, she was sadly returned to the desert, unfixed, and became pregnant again just a few months later. She was still very young when she entered motherhood, and we estimate she was around two years old when she finally came into our care. She is now closer to three.

When we found Sister, she and her babies were living outside. She made herself as comfortable as she could in our backyard but was deeply fearful of human touch and being indoors. It was clear that Sister needed more support than the average dog, so we placed her with a professional trainer who specializes in fearful and shutdown dogs. That decision changed everything for her.

Sister has been with her current foster since May 2025, and during that time she has shown slow and steady and meaningful growth. After just a short period working with her trainer, she began moving comfortably around the house, enjoying beds, crates, and toys, and experiencing safety in ways she never had before. She plays and cuddles with the other dog in the home and has gradually become more comfortable sharing space with people, often choosing to be nearby even if she is not seeking direct attention yet.

In her foster home, Sister continues to progress at her own pace. She tends to stick to her safe spot, but gets more excited for her daily walks as time goes on. She is a funny girl on leash and does not do much sniffing and will sometimes stop suddenly to do her business, which always gives a good laugh. She does not potty on walks yet and prefers to pee privately in a yard, often waiting until she feels completely alone. Because of this, a home with a dedicated yard will be essential for her, and condo or apartment living would likely be challenging.

Sister thrives on routine and calm. She prefers a quiet environment, especially during meals, and will often wait until the house is still before eating. She loves car rides, especially sticking her head out the window, enjoys chewing on her stuffies, and has a habit of collecting toys and keeping them close. She is gentle and tolerant when it comes to handling and is great with her paws and face being touched. She even patiently waits to have all four paws wiped after coming inside from the yard.

She absolutely loves other dogs and often looks to them for confidence, so a dog friendly home with a calm, social canine companion would be ideal. Sister is not your typical almost three year old Golden Retriever. She will need a special adopter, someone patient, understanding, and willing to give her the time and space she needs to continue building trust and confidence.

Sister is sweet, gentle, beautiful, and incredibly unique. Her progress has been slow and steady, but it has been real and lasting. With the right home, her journey is far from over. Please share Sister and help her find the peaceful, loving home she has been waiting for.
