Simon

Simon is about 10 years young and is a gentle, sweet Chihuahua mix. He was checked out by our fab vet and overall he is in good health. He is missing several teeth and we will be going back to the vet on 7/22/26 for his boosters and lab work. Simon can be adopted on his own and would prefer a quiet, adult home where he can have endless naps and snuggles. <br/><br/>Simon has been great at using his foster homes yard, however does still use pee pads inside. He would benefit from wearing a belly band. <br/><br/>Facebook Post:<br/>July 1st was quite exhaustive and intensive right from the get-go. I (Shannon) also volunteer at the Alaska Humane Society Cat Shelter and I am there most mornings very early administering medications and other tasks to ensure each cat is well taken care of. It is a cat shelter ONLY, youll see why that is emphasized.<br/>Before we get started, I will emphasize we will not tolerate bashing of any kind. What happened today was awful, however we never know the circumstances surrounding a situation and judging others never helps the animals in need. What does is taking action and that is exactly what I did. In the end both of the dogs are safe and sound, in our program and will receive the best care possible.<br/>At 6:30 this morning upon arrival at the cat shelter I saw something by the shelters back gate, but felt my eyes were deceiving me. We have cats that roam near the shelter that we are actively trapping and rehabilitating/rehoming, but these were not cats, they were two loose pups! Before I could get out of the car, one of them took off, but the other one was frozen with fear. I slowly approached and then let him come to me. He was nervous, but let me pick him up and I placed him gently into one of the carriers in my car. There he nestled away. The other pup took off, so I went into the shelter to take care of the routine and then started working on a plan to retrieve the other pup.<br/>It took all day, but I determined where the pup was hiding, followed various tracks, including , and I also listened closely for any sounds of movement. Our shelter is part of several units and thankfully we were able to access the other areas. One of the awesome units (Cameron and Christ) let me set up a station to lure the pup in. As I was busy setting that up, I was able to search around a little deeper and finally spotted her. She was very nervous and darted off, but not too far. She ended up heading right to the shelter yard and behind a shed. A UPS truck stopped fortuitously as she went behind the shed and worked with me to keep her there. I then had to crawl under a bunch of fences to get back to the shelter yard, was able to block off the other side of the shed, then the UPS employee (who requested anonymity) helped me to secure the leash around the sweet pup and we successfully got her safe and sound together. <br/>SAFE and pawfect timing!<br/>Off we went to VCA Bering Sea who was able to get both pups in for an appointment so we could get them looked at, vaccinated and hopefully a nail trim. The chihuahua we named Simon and the poodle/dachshund mix we named Philomena. Simon is around 10 years young, needs a dental, is thin, has a wound on his front paw and his eyes have some discoloration. They were able to get a nail trim in which we were so grateful for. Philomena who understandably was more stressed (as she was just caught about a half hour beforehand) allowed herself to get vaccinated but was a big no for anything else. We are not sure if she is spayed so that will be checked at the next visit and a rough estimate of her age is 4-5. That was AOK with us, we just were grateful she is safe and sound. Both pups will be going back in 3 weeks for further diagnostics and their boosters for their vaccinations. <br/>Tonight they are settled in their wonderful temporary foster home and we say temporary for several reasons. First, we will report them found as that is the protocol to follow. Yes we clearly understand they were abandoned, but as stated earlier we do not know the circumstances. We of course wish they had left them with an actual person or a shelter for dogs, but that is now the past. By filing the report we may have the opportunity to find out more information about their past as well. Secondly the foster home where they are at may not be staying in town for much longer so they will need another place to chill OR a home that can be their foster to adopt would be even better.<br/>For now they are comfy, fed and getting all the TLC they can endure. We are grateful to all the people who stepped up to actually do something and helped us bring both of these pups into safe and loving hands. <br/>Todays vet visit was $722.37 and we know the next visit will be more but we will get an estimate prior to July 22nd so we can get that posted if you are interested in helping towards their care! <br/>If you are interested in being their foster home or foster to adopt home, please email us at mojoshope@gmail.com.
