Simba - Dec 24's Story

Looking for your next furry BFF?

We don’t have perfect dogs — but we do have dogs who are perfect for the right someone. Our goal is to match each dog with the home that fits them best and each home with the dog that will sing to your heart.

Ready to adopt? No reason given but most likely she had more males than needed
Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC
Special Needs? None medically - lots socially (see below)
Weight: 21 lbs est
Height: 14 in at the shoulder
Spayed/Neutered: Yes

Adoption Fee: $499

Fence needed? Yes - without exception. Simba is a flight risk especially for his first few months in a new home. A physically fenced and secure fence is necessary while he learns to love you like he loves his foster mom now. Once you've earned that trust, he will never leave your side. Literally never.

What kind of home would be best for me? Simba's perfect home will be a single person, probably a single woman, who is looking for an active, strong and opinionated little boy who wants to hand her his heart and become her prince and her best friend. Simba adores his foster mom and only slightly tolerates the rest of the humans in his life. We think he will transfer that care and affection to the right person, but it's got to be just the right person.

Simba needs someone who understands dogs raised without proper socialization or exposure to the world. Much is still new to Simba. He needs patience and gentle guidance. I do not believe Simba will ever be "normal" but he can be someone's companion, and he continues to become better in many ways than the dog we received last year. I think, especially with a lot of one-on-one attention, he will continue to make progress. It will not be easy but for the right person, it will be fun and satisfying. If you enjoy changing and shaping dog behavior and watching positive changes in a dog due to your hard work and dedication, it will be an amazing process. Simba is wicked smart. He wants to learn.

Simba adores other dogs, especially large dogs. His current besties are two standard poodles and a cavapoo. They run, romp, dash about and in general have the very best time running the back trails here at the poodle farm. He needs at least one other playful dog in his life, and preferably a large one. If it is a smaller one, better be a sturdy one who can keep up with him. Simba is all athlete - strong, muscled and powerful. He is dynamite (personality and physical strength) in a neat, compact body.

What is my personality like? Simba is a quirky little guy with many facets to his personality. To foster mom, he is a velcro dog, looking for her everywhere. Wherever she is, Simba is. To foster dad he's a pain in the neck with his constant barking and resource guarding the upstairs because upstairs is his safe spot. To the caregivers, when foster mom brings him to her office, he is bipolar. Some days he's all over them, happy as can be. The next day, he is resource guarding against everyone in the place.

How do I act when I first meet new people? If we are in foster mom's office, he will be relaxed on the opposite side of the gate from you. He will look at you curiously and if his foster siblings approach you for a treat, he may go with them.

If you were to come into his foster home and he was upstairs, he would stand at the top and bark and bark and warn you off. He does not want strangers in his safe space.

Other tips and tidbits: 1/23/2023 is Simba's exact birthdate.

If you've gotten this far down, good for you. I am sure a lot of people stopped early on because we've tried to make it very, very obvious that Simba is beautiful, but he is a project and a handful. Simba is also on our SOS sponsorship scroller because we understand that finding a home for him is going to be very, very difficult. It's not fair to Simba not to try - so here we are.

Simba was adopted once and returned. The adopter owns his father, who is a far different personality than Simba, more laid back and gentle. It lasted a few weeks but ultimately, we determined Simba needed an owner who had a gentley firm hand and what he was getting was spoiled and pampered. Simba was making the other dogs in the home, including dear old Dad, far too nervous to leave him there. Simba is a LOT of dog.

House trained? He is getting constant reminders, but he was intact for a very long time. It's going to be a tough haul to completely house train him. He looks great in a belly band. Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
Potential Adopters

Dogs can’t drive - and since we’re busy taking care of them, we can’t either! Please check your potential BFF’s location and make sure you’re comfortable traveling to meet them.

Want updates and ways to help?
