Shrek's Story

Shrek was abandoned at the local train station with his mate, Fiona, and survived on handouts from workers, passengers, scavenging and hunting. Eight months ago he started his rehab, was sterilized (neutered), vaccinated, treated for internal and external parasites, tested and treated for any tick borne illness.
Through it all he has been so loving and so sweet! He runs to the car when food arrives, but even though he may be hungry, he cannot forgo the first few minutes of kisses and cuddles. Since he lives outside, his optimal forever home would have a large yard or even a farm. He has never slept inside a day in his life, rather hiding from the tropical rains or the extreme heat under a canopy of trees and plants in the jungle. When the weather is good he sleeps on the sidewalk or under the cars in the parking lot. Shrek would be a fabulous addition to someone’s life and he would be forever grateful! Shrek must be adopted with Fiona because they are an extremely bonded pair of street dogs (see separate listing). They are both still in Mexico waiting for a forever family to rescue them.

When we have an approved adoption application for our adoptable dogs in Mexico, we arrange transport (on a commercial airplane) from Mexico to upstate New York. That process can take up to eight weeks (sometimes longer in the summer when there are flight restrictions based on the temperature outside) so we require patient adopters!

All of our dogs arrive sterilized, healthy, heartworm negative, current on all vaccinations and already on heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Our adoption fee of $400 per dog only partially covers our vet and transport fees as well as your first month of heartworm and flea and tick meds. Since Fiona must be adopted with Shrek, we are reducing the adoption fee to $250 each ($500 total for both dogs).

Approved adopters must pay an initial $250 deposit. Once the dog has arrived in the U.S. you will have an opportunity to meet him/her before making a final decision. We do not want anyone to feel pressured into taking a dog that they do not think is right for them. If you don't think it will work after meeting the dog in person, we will refund your deposit. Once the adoption is completed, the remainder of the adoption fee is due. After the adoption, if the dog does not work out for any reason, it must come back to us (this is part of adoption contract). If the dog is returned in the first 30 days, the adoption fee will be refunded; after 30 days, the entire adoption fee is nonrefundable (but we still want the dog back if you do not want to keep him or her so we can find it a new home).

Our application process involved a pre-adoption home visit as well as a few follow up visits post-adoption so we generally will only accept applications from individuals who reside in upstate New York (within 1.5 hours of the Lake Placid area) or northern Vermont (Burlington area up through St. Albans). If you think an exception is warranted, let us know why. We don't require a fenced yard as a hard rule, but the lack of a fenced yard will certainly result in us taking a closer look at things. However, we do have a few hard rules: we will not adopt to anyone under the age of 21, anyone who is still in college, and anyone who does not own their home unless we can personally speak to the owner of the home or apartment and you have lived at that location for five years or longer. No exceptions on these.

If you are interested in finding out more about Shrek and Fiona and our adoption process, please send us an inquiry and be sure to tell us a little about yourself and why you are thinking about adopting a dog. Thank you for considering our adoptable dogs. Mexican street dogs make the best pets!
