Shirley

When Shirley came to FRR, she was incredibly shut down, but she's now showing us that beneath her nerves is a sweet, loving girl who's just waiting to blossom. <br/><br/>On top of simply learning how to be a dog, new places and experiences can feel overwhelming. When she's unsure, she retreats to her crate, where she feels safe. Give her a little time, though, and she'll start to venture out. After just a week in her current foster home, Shirley is now spending more time in the living room, playing with her foster siblings, lounging on the couch, asking for pets, and showing little glimpses of her silly side. Sometimes she just needs a little encouragement-walking her into a shared space on leash helped her discover that couches and cuddles are pretty great!<br/><br/>Shirley is fully housebroken, walks well on leash, and rides nicely in the car. She goes outside without issue and, on occasion, has even left her crate and walked to the front door to let her foster family know she needs to go out. Loud or unexpected noises can still startle her, but she's improving with daily exposure.<br/><br/>The right canine companion makes a big difference for Shirley. She struggled as the only dog in her previous foster home, and she also had difficulty connecting with dogs who are also on the timid/introverted side. In her current foster home, her outgoing foster siblings have helped her grow more comfortable each day. She watches them, follows their lead, and is now beginning to join in the fun. Because of that, Shirley would do best with a friendly, confident dog who can show her the ropes. She's also great with cats and has even given some of the resident kitties kisses.<br/><br/>Shirley needs a patient family willing to give her time. She may try to blend into the background at first, but the Shirley you meet on day one won't be the same Shirley you know a week or a month later. Her ideal home will give her the space she needs to feel safe while gently encouraging her to leave her comfort zone. She doesn't need to be rushed-just shown that the world is safe and that good things are waiting for her when she's ready.<br/><br/>She's already made excellent progress and is discovering how wonderful life can be. She loves animal friends, cozy couches, cuddles, and treats, and with a patient family and a confident canine companion, Shirley will become an incredible lifelong companion.
