Shelby's Story

Meet Shelby!

Fostered in New Jersey | 3 years old

Shelby is a joyful, toy-loving sweetheart who has been blooming beautifully in her foster home. True to her silly, lovable Newfie nature, she frequently naps on her back with her paws in the air — the perfect position to receive all the gentle brushing she adores. Shelby's coat and skin were in really bad shape when she first arrived in rescue so her foster pawrents have done a great job taking it nice and slow, keeping it gentle and positive. She still has healing to do on areas of her skin, it will take time.

When you walk through the door, Shelby will always have a toy ready to greet you, eager for a game of tug. She usually wins (she's very proud of this), though her foster brother Henry scored his first victory last week!

Manners & Home Life

Shelby is very polite during mealtimes — patiently waiting and showing wonderful kitchen manners. She did once help herself to two entire loaves of stuffed bread (broccoli and sausage — delicious!), but that was her one and only counter-surfing adventure.

She is growing steadily in confidence, now exploring the yard independently and showing much calmer behavior when left alone. She used to struggle with separation anxiety, but she has made amazing progress and continues to improve.

Shelby enjoys rough-and-tumble play with her male Newfoundland foster brother but has learned to be more gentle with him over time. She knows how to adjust when reminded and wants everyone to have fun. She'd love a rough and tumble wrestle buddy in her forever home!

Leash & Adventure Progress

Shelby is working on street confidence, especially near cars. Her foster has helped her discover that treats = courage! Now, she's proudly walking to the beach and can stay focused even when things get exciting around her. Slow and steady — but she is truly thriving with encouragement and structure. Adopters will certainly need to continue her leash manners. Shelby currently enjoys an active lifestyle with frequent beach walks and play sessions.

Health Notes

Shelby was just recently spayed and recovering, up to date on all care, and has routine ongoing monitoring for a scaly patch under her chin (she likes to rub it on the carpet). It's being checked as part of her medical care and she's on medication to help with the itch. Her skin is still healing overall.

The Perfect Home For Shelby

This lovable girl would thrive with:

A confident canine buddy (optional but a huge bonus!)

A family that enjoys interactive playtime

Continued positive-reinforcement training

Someone who appreciates big snuggles and bigger personality

Shelby's heart is as big as her smile — she's ready to bring joy, laughter, and toys (always toys!) into her forever home.

If you think Shelby sounds like your kind of girl, apply today!

Keep checking our website for updates or submit an application today. You only need to apply once to be considered for any dog that is a match for your home!

** Want to send this dog a gift? When you purchase a bib or bandana from our store with the code 4FOSTER they will receive it. The rescue receives the profit from the sale and the foster dog receives a gift!

When purchasing for a specific dog, please include that note in the comments.

Or, purchase one for yourself!

Link for Bibs

https://nationalnewfoundlandrescue.com/product-category/bib/

Link for Bandanas

https://nationalnewfoundlandrescue.com/product-category/bandanas/
