Shadow's Story

Shadow is a 1 year old pitbull and cattle dog mix, born January 3, 2025, with a huge heart and an even bigger love for people.

Shadow and his brother, Hercules, came to us after being dumped in Kamiah and left to fend for themselves. A kind woman in the community stepped in to care for them, making sure they were fed, loved, and taken on walks. Due to housing restrictions, she was unable to bring them indoors, but she did everything she could to keep them safe.
Despite being free roaming dogs, Shadow and Hercules never chased deer, livestock, or other animals. They were gentle with local children and quickly became community favorites. Unfortunately, not everyone was as kind. Some neighbors threatened to shoot them simply for being strays, and similar threats were even made by law enforcement. At that point, we stepped in and brought both boys to safety.

Since October 2, 2025, Shadow has been thriving in foster care, and spent 6 weeks at the PAWS Orofino training program. He has made noticeable progress in confidence and overall comfort with the world around him. He is still a little timid at times, but he listens well, knows several basic commands, and walks beautifully on a leash.
Shadow does well with children when introductions are slow and respectful. He has also done well with the cat in his foster home, showing appropriate behavior and calm curiosity.

Hades is a big fan of Petco trips, especially because he knows he gets to pick out a toy every time. He has a special attachment to his tiny bed and proudly drags it from room to room, along with his blankets, which he carries around gently without tearing them up.
He has also spent time going to work with his foster, where he proudly serves as a “dispatch pup.” He greets everyone, happily collects his belly rub fee, and then curls up on his work blanket for a well earned nap. Being an office dog is hard work.

Despite being such a wonderful, loving boy, Shadow has not had any adoption interest yet. He is one of those dogs who quietly waits in the background, even though he has so much love to give.

Idaho Animal Rescue Network's Adoption Policy
Upon completing an application for adoption, potential adopters are contacted via email or phone to discuss the needs (present and future) of the animal they hope to adopt. Approved adopters are then invited to meet with the animal one-on-one to get a better idea of their personality. In some instances, we offer them a couple of meet and greets. Because some of our animals come from abuse/neglect situations, we do not ever rush adoptions and appreciate the adopters who understand this process. A home visit is required and if renting, a potential adopter must provide landlord information so approval can be verified by our staff. * We do NOT adhere to a first-come adoption basis. We seek the best fit for the animals in our care.
