Scruffy's Story

MEET SCRUFFY!

Scruffy a 4-year old, 40 lb terrier mix that was transferred to Charley’s strays from our rescue partners in Miami who saved her from an overcrowded shelter. Scruffy is wary of new humans and needs time to warm up and trust without feeling pressure to socialize. As you can see from these pictures, once he knows he has met a friend, he is full of love. Scruffy is looking for a quiet, low-traffic, ADULT ONLY home.

We found he warmed up very quickly to our dog caretaker, Rebecca and to photographer / volunteer, Bonnie B.

As often shy dogs feel more comfortable with other dogs around, Scruffy would benefit greatly from having a confident canine companion in his new home to learn from and put him at ease.

His shy nature will be important to remember for vet visits and social events. For instance, taking him to the vet before a scheduled appointment to get him acquainted would be a good plan. Making sure he has a quiet place to go to during parties and events will also be helpful.

From our southern rescue partners:

“We found his previous owner and she mentioned that he slow to warm to new people when he first met them. This turned out to be true. Once he gets to know them, he warms up nicely.

He is a playful boy. Walks well on the leash too. He has a little mohawk :)

He is good with dogs even smaller ones and walks well on the leash. We believe he should not be placed with children.”

>> Dogs: Scruffy has done well with dogs he has met so far. He would benefit from a canine companion in his new home. As part of the foster/adoption process, any resident dog(s) will be asked to come to the shelter for a meet and greet.

>> Cats: We have no information on how Scruffy reacts to cats. As a result, a cat free home, or one that can initially **separate** cat from dog to do slow on-leash introductions, is required.

>> Children: Due to his shy nature, Scruffy is looking for a home without children.

Scruffy is neutered and up to date on vaccines. He tested negative for Heartworm and is on monthly prevention. Please consider opening your home and heart to Scruffy!

*** IMPORTANT!***

IMPORTANT As a “southern” dog and due to the high rate of heartworm infection in the warmer climates, it is critical that Scruffy be kept on monthly heartworm prevention ALL YEAR LONG not just in the summer months. It takes 6 months for heartworm larva to turn into adult worms that then are visible on a heartworm test.

Monthly prevention will kill any larva. Adoptive parents must commit to this prevention schedule as well as heartworm testing every 6 months for the first year and annually after that.

Heartworm prevention costs about $120 a year. Compare that to treating a dog for heartworm (a deadly disease) an expense of thousands of dollars for a treatment that is dangerous and difficult for the dog.

*** ADOPTION PROTOCOLS ***
>> Please complete and return our adoption application to charleysstrays@yahoo.com prior to arranging a meeting between your family and dog of interest. Link to application below.

>> Copy & paste into the body of an email, or WORD/text document to complete.

ADOPTION APPLICATION
https://charleysstrays.us/application.htm

>> AFTER the application has been received AND you hear back from Charley’s volunteer, Gabi. Please schedule a time to visit the shelter to meet the dog of interest. 207-426-9482.
