Sassy - Girl's Best Friend's Story
Meet Sassy – A Special Little Dog with a Big Journey Ahead ?

Sassy is a 7-year-old pup who came into our care in March and has made some slow but meaningful progress since then. She’s looking for an adopter who can offer patience, structure, and love — and in return, she’ll offer quiet companionship and the satisfaction of helping a dog blossom into her best self.

We believe in full transparency, and Sassy is a complex dog with some ongoing medical and behavioral needs. She’s not the right match for everyone — but she’s absolutely worth the effort for the right person.

? Medical Notes
Sassy has had a few seizures while in rescue and, after consulting with her former owner’s family, we learned they had occurred “once in a while” for a few years — but were never treated. Her bloodwork came back normal, and she’s now on Keppra, which has successfully controlled the seizures.

She is also significantly overweight, weighing in at 12 pounds when she should ideally be around 6–7 lbs. She’s on a prescription weight-loss food and gets measured portions daily — no treats, but she happily takes her medications in a small spoonful of wet food. We’ve also added Galliprant to manage joint discomfort caused by her extra weight. The good news? Sassy loves to walk, and gentle, consistent exercise will be a key part of her weight-loss journey.

? Behavior & Personality

When Sassy first arrived, she was shut down and extremely fearful — barely leaving her bed to eat or drink. After 7 weeks of little improvement, she began working with a behaviorist and started Gabapentin to ease her anxiety.

Now, she’s showing signs of progress. She’s still timid, but learning that new things (and people) don’t have to be scary. Her foster uses positive reinforcement to help her through tough moments — like tossing a piece of kibble when something frightening happens, to change her emotional response.

Sassy does tend to bond tightly with “her person” and can become protective, barking at others who come close. This behavior is rooted in fear, not aggression, and with continued support, she’s learning to feel safer and more secure in her surroundings. She’s most comfortable in a quiet home with women, though she is starting to warm up to the man in her foster home.

? Ideal Home
A calm, patient adopter with a gentle approach to help her continue building trust

Preferably female adopters or a female-led home

No young children or high-energy dogs

Someone committed to following through with her weight loss plan, seizure medication, and behavioral training

We know Sassy has a long road ahead of her — but she’s already made incredible strides. To help her transition, we’re happy to provide three months of her medications to her adoptive home.

If you’re looking for a meaningful rescue story and have the heart and patience to walk beside her on this journey, Sassy just might be your girl.

? Apply today and help her finally find the safe, quiet forever home she deserves.

Could Sassy be your perfect match? Reach out to learn more!
