Sarge's Story

Sarge’s foster mom here! Sarge is a super special guy who will fetch his way into your heart. He LIVES to retrieve. There is nothing he won’t pick up and bring to you if you toss it for him! Sarge is a terrific boy who is looking for a family to love him and give him all the attention he desires and deserves.

Unlike a lot of dogs in rescue, we know a good bit of Sarge’s history. He is 6 years old and weighs 83 pounds. His previous family took very good care of him but due to his humans having some medical issues and wanting more for him, they found Save a Lab.

When Sarge initially came to my house, he was understandably a little anxious. It took a while for him to feel at home but since then, he has been the best boy! When I come home, I find Sarge patiently waiting at the door for me. He isn’t left alone for long periods of time; usually just two to three hours.

Sarge does not tolerate being crated – although he did fine in a crate at his previous home. The difference is that he previously had another dog next to him and here, he is by himself. Sarge is left uncrated when we leave the house and he is very well behaved.

Sarge LOVES toys and for the most part he will not chew them up. There has been one or two toys that when he was a little anxious he nibbled on. Since settling into our home, he has been perfect. Sarge has never chewed up anything other than a dog toy.

It is important to understand that Sarge has a good deal of energy. He thrives on daily exercise, and is such a calm, good boy when he well exercised. Sarge can be trusted off leash without any issue and never leaves my side unless it’s to retrieve his ball. In the house, he will find a toy, drop it in your lap and look at you. If you don’t toss it, he will pick it up again and again hoping maybe you will change your mind. Before coming to me he had never been swimming but the first time his ball fell in the pool he didn’t hesitate one bit and went in after it! Now, Sarge loves the water!

Sarge listens very well and wants to please at all times. He walks so nicely on a leash and is no problem even when walking with my two personal dogs. He has yet to meet a dog he doesn’t get along with. Even with his high energy he meets all people in a friendly manner and never jumps on them although he may jump around them! Sarge has been good with the cats he has met.

When it comes time for bed, Sarge hops up next to us and sleeps like a rock! He is happy to stay in bed as long as we do. Sarge is super good about his food and while I am making the dogs’ meals he waits where his bowl goes. Although he finishes first, he never tries to help the other dogs finish their food.

As mentioned earlier, Sarge was a little anxious when he first came into foster care. He is a dog who will need some patience while he adjusts to his new surroundings. Sarge did a lot of pacing and panting initially but now that he realizes he is in a good place he doesn’t do any of that! Sarge gets nervous at the vet and needs time to feel safe there. He really just needs a little extra understanding.

We have a lot of Labs pass through our house. Sarge is a special guy who really is a treasure. He just needs the right amount of exercise and love to fit into his new home. The perfect home for him would include lots of retrieving and having his family around a good bit. He would enjoy being able to go out on adventures and share his zest for life with everyone he meets!

Sarge will be available for adoption on, or after, March 13th, 2026

If you are interested in Sarge and are an approved adopter, please contact your Adoption Coordinator to be added to Sarge’s list. If you are a not yet approved, you can find our adoption guidelines and application at: www.savealabrescue.org

Sarge is fostered in RI
