Sarge's Story

Meet Sarge!

He is a playful and spunky guy gives the best hugs. He came in as an owner surrender. Before arriving, he had lived his entire life in a backyard behind a four-foot fence.

This New Year, Sarge has just one resolution:
Finally be adopted into a real home. Not another year outdoors. Not another night wondering when he will finally have a home to call his own, Just a couch to nap on, a warm bed, and a family to call his own! Sarge has spent his whole life outside, but somehow his heart is still wide open. He’s the kind of dog who gives love freely, laughs easily (yes... happy zoomies included) and makes friends with every person he meets. He doesn’t ask for much just a chance! A door that opens and stays open!

Imagine starting your year with a dog who greets every day like it’s the best day ever! That’s Sarge -- Loyal. Sweet. Ready to give a lifetime of love to the person who says, "You’re home now."

He is an expert at opening all types of door (gates, garage doors, front door, kennel), but somehow always stayed contained behind a four-foot fence. He also will try to sneak treats from your treat pouch with his big Shepherd nose. He keeps his kennel sooo clean, so we can assume that he is fully potty trained. He has such amazing potential to be someone's dream dog.

He recently went on a Dog Day Out to the beach! Here's what our volunteers had to say: "Sarge! He enjoyed a beach outing today and made full use of his 16-ft leash without pulling once he reached the end of it. He did bark at other dogs, so he’ll benefit from training to help him unlearn that habit. When the beach was quiet, he was relaxed, affectionate, and playful—chasing his ball and carrying a stick. He’s a beautiful, loving dog who will thrive with guidance and consistency."

He, unfortunately, has tested heart worm positive. HSH will cover the cost of treatment, but he will need to be in a home (not a crazy shelter environment) to complete it. According to the vet, his teeth are in excellent condition, so it is possible that he is younger than the seven years reported by the original owner.

Male
7 years
75 lbs

Origin Story:
Owner Surrender: According to the surrender notes, he was an outside only dog, and is a German Shepherd/St. Bernard/Australian Shepherd mix.

---------------------------------------------------
Hours: 11am-4pm each day
No appointments required

Disclaimer: Please only use our website (https://www.hshobart.org/adopt/adoptable-animals) to apply for pets. Applications submitted through Petfinder or Petango have a tendency to get lost in the abyss. You are also welcome to apply in-person during the hours listed above.
