Sampson's Story
Sampson is really smart and a wonderfully affectionate and well behaved dog and being blind will stun you when you watch his behavior and see just how clever he is. He is a fascinating study. Too incredible to even write here as there is so much to tell. He may have been a hunting dog in his youth as he was not neutered and has an amazing nose to go with his hound dog howl. He has excellent hearing, loves the car, dogs who are nice to him and cats. He is housetrained and just a fascinating study in very cool special needs dog behavior. Adoption fee is waived to just the right home. If you note the boxes checked for personality traits you will see how highly we think of Sampson. However, we also know his issues and one is high reactivity to dogs who growl or play growl of when things involving dogs escalates to loud behavior and kinetic energy. Ideally Sampson should be an only dog OR with a dog who would not engage with him. I watch when a dog tries to play with him and it confuses him in his blindness as though he can smell the phenomes he cant judge other signs dogs visually exhibit, he knows that and has built in self protection.<br/>Tried to get him into a Scent program at SUNY Cobbleskill but it is too far. The FDA would appreciate him if we had an' in ' there because blind dogs actually can have advanced scent abilities and Sampson does.
